The Lord Loves The Gates Of Zion

 

 

 

"... and the Most High Himself will establish her."

He has found His city on the holy mountains.

The LORD loves the gates of Zion 

more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

Glorious things are ascribed to you,

O city of God.

 (Pause and calmly think of that) 

" I will mention Rahab (Egypt)  and Babylon,

among those who know Me-

along with Philistia, Tyre, and Cush, (Ethiopia)

when I say, "This one was born in Zion." 

And it will be said of Zion:

"This one and that one were born in her,

and the Most High Himself will establish her." 

 The LORD will record in the register of the peoples:

"This one was born in Zion."

Psalm 87  views Zion ( Israel; Jerusalem) as founded of God, a city which has foundations.
Men had cities, and boasted of them; but God had a city He founded in the holy mountains.
Even here it was not Joseph or the richness of nature; God was its riches, its place the
holy mountains, what was consecrated to Himself.  In the power of the Spirit, the godly
is not ashamed of it, glorious things are spoken of it, nay, not in the presence of
all the earth's seats of boasting.

 

Egypt and Babylon in vain vaunted themselves; Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia, who all
had their day.  The godly could talk of them without fear of comparison.  It was accounted
the birthplace of the man of God; the birthplace of the beloved ones of Jehovah.

 
 The Highest established her. When Jehovah made the registry of all the people, He reckoned
this man was born there.  Joy and celebration of His praise was found there, and all the
fresh springs of Jehovah.  I have little doubt that "this man" refers to Christ.

The word translated "man" (Psalm 87:5) refers to great men, not the poor and miserable.
They are the children of the once desolate.  As Isaiah 49: 21-22 attests:

 

"Then Zion, you will say in your heart, Who has borne me all these children, seeing
that I lost my offspring and am alone and barren and unfruitful, an exile put away 
and wandering hither and thither?  And who brought them up? Behold, I was left alone,
 put away by the Lord my Husband; from where then did all these children come?

 

Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will lift up My hand to the Gentile nations and
set My standard and raise high My signal banner to the peoples; and they will bring
 your sons in the bosom of their garments, and your daughters 
will be carried upon their shoulders."

oppressors trodden underfoot.  And all flesh shall know that Jehovah is her Savior."
