A September Farewell

"He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time.
He has also planted eternity, a sense of divine purpose, in the human heart-
a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God,
yet man cannot comprehend what God has done from the beginning to the end."
Ecclesiastes 3:11

(1932-  )

Lo! a ripe sheaf of many golden days

Gleaned by the year in autumn's harvest ways,

With here and there, blood-tinted as an ember,

Some crimson poppy of a late delight

Atoning in its splendor for the flight

Of summer blooms and joys

This is September.

How Precious Is The Book Divine

"Your Word is a lamp to my feet,  And a light to my path."
(Psalm 119:105)

Autumn Path Through The Woods
(1876)
Camille Pissaro
(1830-1903)

How precious is the book divine,

By inspiration giv'n;

Bright as a lamp its pages shine

To guide our souls to Heav'n.

Its light descending from above,

Our gloomy world to cheer,

Displays a Savior's boundless love,

And brings His glories near.

Oh, precious book of light and life

Thou source of truth and love,

In Thee we view God's matchless grace,

And all His goodness prove,

Oh precious book whose light e'er shines

With bright and cheering ray,

To guide our our souls until the dawn

Of the eternal day.

It shows to man his wand'ring ways,

And where his feet have trod;

And brings to view the matchless grace

Of a forgiving God.

O'er all the straight and narrow way

Its radiant beams are cast;

A light whose never weary ray

Grows brightest at the last.

Oh, precious book of light and life

Thou source of truth and love,

In Thee we view God's matchless grace,

And all His goodness prove,

Oh precious book whose light e'er shines

With bright and cheering ray,

To guide our our souls until the dawn

Of the eternal day.

It sweetly cheers our fainting hearts

In this dark vale of tears;

Life, light and joy it still imparts,

And quells our rising fears.

This lamp, through all the tedious night

Of life, shall guide our way,

Till we behold the clearer light

Of an eternal day.

Oh, precious book of light and life

Thou source of truth and love,

In Thee we view God's matchless grace,

And all His goodness prove,

Oh precious book whose light e'er shines

With bright and cheering ray,

To guide our our souls until the dawn

Of the eternal day.

Henry "Orator" Hunt (1773-1835) was a firebrand speaker and agitator in the
British  parliament best known for leading the charge of working-class radicalism.

He was an important influence in the Chartist Movement for political
reform in Britain, that existed between 1838-1857. He also fought for the
repeal of the Corn Laws in his nation, which were a series of tariffs
and other trade restrictions on imported food and corn enforced
 in the United Kingdom between 1815 and 1846.

The word, "corn" in Britain referred to all cereal grains,
 including wheat, oats, and barley.

John Gale Jones (1769-1838) was a radical English orator. He was also a
member in good standing in the London Corresponding Society, a federation
of local reading and debating clubs organized in the decade after the
French Revolution,  whose goals were to establish democratic
 reform within the British Parliament.

 The Society appealed largely to the every day working class
population in Great Britain at that time-artisans, tradesmen,
and shopkeepers.  Jones was imprisoned at least several times
 for his participation in speaking out against the government.

William Cobbett

George Cooke

William Cobbett (1763-1835) was a farm boy from Farnham, Surrey, a soldier,
and a member of the British Parliament.  He distributed his political views
in unbound and inexpensive booklets which could be widely distributed
 among Britain's increasing working class population.

Cobbett sought political reform to better the lives of the common
laborer, especially in his fight to abolish "rotten boroughs" or
 corrupt, unrepresented influence within the House of Commons.

 During his time in Parliament, he fought for lower taxes, saving,
 reversing common enclosures, and resisting the 1821 gold standard.

While living in America, Cobbett opened a bookstore in Philadelphia
in July, 1796.  To express his loyalty to his nation and the British crown,
he placed a large portrait of King George III in his shop window.

This open display of pro-British sentiment obviously attracted
curious stares, as well as much consternation within many a
passersby, and is said to have created quite a stir of notoriety
 for Cobbett within our fledgling nation at the time.

However, unlike other radical reformers of his day William Cobbett
did not consider himself, "a citizen of the world" nor did he endorse
the idea of a Republican Britain.  Cobbett was considered a
conservative thinker and a loyalist to the United Kingdom.

"It quite enough for me to think about what is best for
England, Scotland, and Ireland," he once said.

Of apple peel

The air is full

Of old smells to feel,

Ripe fruit, old footballs,

Burning brush,

New books, erasers,

Chalk, and such.

The bee, his hive,

Well-honeyed hum,

And Mother cuts Chrysanthemums.

Like plates washed clean

With suds, the days

Are polished with

The School Of The Master

I am one of the lowliest learners,

Content in my corner to stay,

Yet I learn of a wonderful Teacher,

Who sets me a lesson each day.

Illustration by Cecily Mary Barker

There are clever and talented scholars,

Whose portions assigned are so grand

I but listen and watch from a distance,

For near them I never could stand;

Yet here in the School of the Master

All fitted and furnished, I see

A  place for the lowliest learner,

And so there's a corner for me.

The teacher provideth a text-book

For all who are willing to learn;

Ability too, He will furnish,

The lessons of truth to discern.

And my book is the life all about me,

So simple, yet busy and sweet,

Though homely and quiet, 'tis truly

Not less with an interest replete.

As the life does not open out grandly,

Nor reach an expansion sublime,

So the lessons I learn must be lowly,

And given, "just one at a time".

The writing is fine on some pages,

And then I bend low o'er the book,

The "notes" and the faint underlining

Distinctly when I look.

Many lessons of wisdom are oral,

The Voice of the Master I hear,

Then I grow very quiet and hearken,

And wait for His word of good cheer.

Oh, life hath a marvelous meaning,

If we but interpret it right,

Each day is inscribed with a lesson,

So let us hold up to the light

Each one of the close-written pages,

Till all is quite clear to our sight.

Not one of the marvels of Nature,

Albeit in silence 'tis wrought,

Not one of life's smallest conditions,

That is not instinct with a thought.

My duty and joy is to find it,

Though hidden in housewifely toils,

To search for it, inside and outside,

Till I can return with the spoils.

A gain, beyond all common measure,

Is ever a lesson discerned;

But precious and priceless the treasure

Of heart-lessons faithfully learned.

I have partly learned some of my lessons,

Some others but dimly I see;

I was ever, I think, a slow learner:

My Teacher is patient with me:

So patient and tender and loving,

So gentle and kindly His rule,

I care not how simple my lessons,

If they are but taught in His school;

Articulate then, in the breezes,

Or written in forest and field,

In the homeliest details of living

The lessons of truth are revealed;

As fast as I see them and learn them,

Their sweetness and comfort they yield.

Dear to our hearts though mountains may be,

Here is a night for the wave and the sea;

Never before was ocean so fair,

Moonlight and starlight are calling us there,

Moonlight and starlight are calling us there.

Moonlight is magic; starlight, a spell;

Over the world they have woven it well.

Night of enchantment, glamorous night!

Surely the mermaids are singing tonight.

Come, let us sail, then, out where the breeze

Stirs in splendor the crest of the seas.

Never again may scene be so fair,

The 2021 Harvest Moon will rise on  Monday, September 20th, however,
 it will appear full from Sunday morning through Tuesday morning.

Furthermore, the Old Farmer's Almanac says that unlike other full moons,
this one is not associated with a specific month.  The Harvest Moon
is determined in association with the autumnal equinox.
   This year, the equinox will occur on Wednesday, September 22nd,
 the official first day of the fall season in the western hemisphere.

The full moon nearest to this time will be called
the full Harvest Moon.  However, the Harvest Moon
could happen in either September or in October,
depending on how the lunar cycles line up
with the Gregorian calendar.

After God's Own Heart

PSALM 18

Excerpts taken from a Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord,
a man after God's own heart, who spoke the words of this song
 to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him
 from the hands of all his enemies
and from the hand of Saul.

I love You fervently and devotedly, O Lord, my Strength.

The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer;

my God, my keen and firm Strength

in Whom I will take refuge,

my Shield, and the horn of my salvation,

my High Tower.

I will call upon the Lord,  Who is to be praised;

so shall I be saved from my enemies.

The Lord rewarded me

according to my righteousness

my conscious integrity and sincerity

with Him;

according to the cleanness of my hands

He recompensed me.

For I have kept the ways of the Lord

and have not wickedly departed

from my God.

For You deliver an afflicted and humble people

but will bring down those with haughty looks.

You cause my lamp to be lighted

and to shine;

the Lord my God

illuminates my darkness.

As for God, His way is perfect!

The word of the Lord is tested and tried;

He is a Shield to all who take refuge

and put their trust in Him.

Therefore, I will give thanks

 and extol You, O Lord,

among the nations,

and sing praises to Your name."

Remembering Don Collier (1928-2021)

Don Collier, the ruggedly handsome American actor known
 for his work in western movies and television shows, died this
 week at his home in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.  He was 92.
May he rest in peace.

Don as ranch foreman Sam Butler on "The High Chaparral"

An accomplished actor whose films include, "Eldorado"
 "The Undefeated" "Tombstone" and "The War Wagon"
Don is perhaps best remembered as the tough-as-nails ranch foreman
Sam Butler on the NBC-TV western  "The High Chaparral".
Don appeared in almost every episode of this popular weekly series,
starting with the show's pilot,  "Destination Tucson" in 1967
and ending with the final two part episode,
"The New Lion Of The Sonora" in 1971.

I remember Don as the bubble gum chewing cowboy "The Gum Fighter"
in a series of commercials for Hubba Bubba bubble gum in the 1970's.

He and fellow actor Robert Hoy, who played his younger
brother "Joe Butler" on "The High Chaparral" later made
 an appearance together in "The Runaway Caboose"
 a second season episode of another hit NBC-TV
 western series, "Little House On The Prairie".

Don played a hard-edged engineer of a passenger train on a collision
course with a caboose on the loose carrying Mary and Laura Ingalls
and their friend and neighbor Carl Edwards.

Bob Hoy was cast as the train's fireman who ended up in a fight with
Pa Ingalls after the latter jumped into the engine cab demanding
 that the train be stopped before it runs head-on into the caboose.

Don Collier (left) and Robert Hoy (center)
in a scene from the Little House episode
 "The Runaway Caboose"
(1976)

Of course, once Bob the fireman spots the car flying down
the tracks towards them, Don the engineer brings the train
to a screeching halt and starts backing her down the line.
Once he gets the train to match the speed of the runaway
caboose, the car hits the front of the train twice before
hooking to the engine's coupler and bringing a
successful ending to the children's wild ride!

  While we have experienced bad windstorms and even

large violent whirlwind caught many people off guard in my area.

 I thank Almighty God for the advances of technology in recent

On My Mind: Don't Tread On Me Or My Healthcare Mr. Biden!

President Biden's recently implemented vaccine mandate clearly violates
the rights of We The People under the United States Constitution.

The Gadsen Flag.

American citizens have a right to their faith beliefs, their freedom of speech
and expression, their medical privacy, and the right to be secure in themselves,
and in their homes and places of work, and to be protected from unnecessary
"search and seizure" which can be equated with his edict of forced compliance
to receive a vaccination or submit to weekly Covid testing or else face the
loss of a job and income to support themselves and their families.

Why is it that the Democrats so vehemently defend a woman's right to choose to
have an abortion and cater to the pro-choice groups screaming, "My body, my choice!"
and yet this same "right" over people having control over their bodies does not
extend to Americans who refuse to take a vaccination for Covid-19?

Aside from the sinister implications here, the FDA continues to rule these
vaccination shots as "experimental" meaning that they should only be
 administered on a voluntary basis.

  If someone wants to get a shot than get a shot.

Leave the rest of us who choose not to alone!

"My sacrifice, the sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, broken down with sorrow for sin
and humbly and thoroughly penitent, such O God,
You will not despise."
(Psalm 51:17)

"Bind Up The Brokenhearted"
Sandy Freckleton Gagon

With broken heart and contrite sigh,

A trembling sinner, Lord, I cry;

Thy pardoning grace is rich and free:

O God, be merciful to me.

I smite upon my troubled breast,

With deep and conscious guilt oppressed,

Christ and His cross my only plea:

O God, be merciful to me.

Far off I stand with tearful eyes,

Nor dare uplift them to the skies;

But Thou dost all my anguish see:

O God, be merciful to me.

Nor alms, nor deeds that I have done,

Can for a single sin atone;

To Calvary alone I flee:

O God, be merciful to me.

And when, redeemed from sin and hell,

With all the ransomed throng I dwell,

My raptured song shall ever be,

God has been merciful to me.

The Holy Days Of Our Lord: Day Of Atonement

This evening beginning at sunset, Jews all over the world
will observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

From the Mount of Olives in Israel, beloved Hebrew
Christian Bible teacher Zola Levitt (1938-2006)
  explains this holy convocation of God, and how once a year
the priest entered into the presence of God in the Holy of Holies.
 Here a sacrifice was made for the corporate sin of the nation.

As believers we know that Christ was our atonement through
 His death on the cross, that He was buried, and that He
arose on the third day as the Scriptures foretold.
