Compromise in Egypt: Chaplain Peter Marshall

A voice from the past speaks a powerful message for America today.

Reverend Peter Marshall Sr. (1902-1949) was a Scottish-American
preacher and pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church
in Washington DC.  He was  twice-appointed Chaplain of the
 United States Senate.   The story of his short yet remarkable
life was re-told in the best-selling book,  "A Man Called Peter"
written by his wife, Catherine Marshall in 1951.

The book was later made into the Oscar-nominated
movie, "A Man Called Peter" in 1955 starring
Richard Todd and Jean Peters.

Monday Meditation: Do Not Fret...Pray!

"Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but, in every circumstance
and in everything, by prayer and petition, definite requests, with thanksgiving,
continue to make your wants known to God.

And God's peace shall be yours, that tranquil state of the soul assured of
its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being
content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace which
transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over
your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

Heaven And Earth And Sea And Air

"Who has ascended into heaven and descended?

Who has gathered the wind in His fists?

 Who has bound the waters in His garment?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is His name, and what is His Son's name,

if you know it?"

Heaven and earth, and sea and air,

All their Maker's praise declare;

Wake my soul, awake and sing;

 Now thy grateful praises bring.

See the glorious orb of day

  Breaking through the clouds his way;

Moon and stars with silvery light,

  Praise Him through the silent night.

See how He hath everywhere

 Made this earth so rich and fair,

Hill and vale and fruitful land,

 All things living, show His hand.

Lord, great wonders workest Thou!

  To Thy sway all creatures bow;

Write Thou deeply in my heart,

  What I am and what Thou art.

Amen.

In Memoriam: Country Roads

I am not sure what it is about this particular song, but when my father
passed away three years ago today,  "Country Roads" came into my
 mind.  I am not sure whether my Dad liked this song or not, and I
was not sure it was a song to play at his funeral.  (It wasn't.)

This song not only makes me feel homesick, but a sense of longing for
  those happy days of my childhood in a far different America, when
my Dad would take my mother and all six of us kids camping
for a week every summer in the beautiful Down East
community of Jackman, Maine.

Traveling with six kids in a crowded motor home from
New Jersey to Maine often wore on Dad's patience and
although the trip seemed long and sometimes boring,
we all had a lot of fun once we arrived at our destination.

I remember we use to sing along with songs on the radio
back then (the mid-1970's) to pass the time and to help
 keep Dad from falling asleep behind the wheel!  It worked!

"Country Roads" was released in April, 1971 and although
it moved slowly up the record charts, by August of the same
year it reached Number 2# on the Billboard Hot 100.
It has since become an American classic and
singer John Denver's signature song.
At least I think so!

In memory of my beloved father and the songs we sang
traveling down those country roads so long ago.
Rest in peace Daddy.

Flashback Friday: Michael Row The Boat Ashore

"On the surface, lilies white,

A painted skiff with a singing crew,

Sky-reflections soft and bright,

Tremulous crimson, gold, and blue."*

The Story Behind the Song

"Michael Row The Boat Ashore" is a 19th century American folksong
which is said to be from the slave era,  and whose lyrics speak of
crossing the River Jordan to find, "milk and honey on the other side",
-that joyous day when we will meet the Lord, and be reunited with family
 members and friends who have preceded us in death- in the Promised Land.

Recorded by the folk group, The Highwaymen, in 1960, this stirring
 song became a favorite anthem during the Civil Rights Movement.

Come to the waters and he who has no money,

Isaiah 55:1

Wednesday's Word: Let "Forward!" Be Our Watch-Word

"Pay attention and always be on your guard looking out
for one another.  If your brother sins, misses the mark,
solemnly tell him so and reprove him, and if he repents,
feeling sorry for having sinned, forgive him.

And even if he sins against you seven times in a day,
and turns to you seven times and says, I repent, I am sorry,
you must forgive him, give up resentment and consider
the offense as recalled and annulled.

The apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith, that
trust and confidence that spring from our belief in God.

And the Lord answered, If you had faith, trust and confidence
in God even so small like a grain of mustard seed, you could say
to this mulberry tree, Be pulled up by the roots, and be planted
in the sea, and it
would obey you."

"Forward!" be our watch-word,  Steps and voices joined;

Seek the things before us,  Not a look behind:

Burns the fiery pillar  At our army's head;

Who shall dream of shrinking,  By our Captain led?

Forward through the desert,  Through the toil and fight,

Jordan flows before us,  Zion beams with light.

Monday Meditation: Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

I remember so well this prayer I said

Each night as my mother tucked me in bed,

And today this same prayer is still the best way

To sign off with God at the end of the day.

And to ask Him your soul to safely keep

As you wearily close your tired eyes in sleep,

Feeling content that the Father above

Will hold you secure in His great arms of love...

And having His promise if ere you wake

His angels reach down, your sweet soul to take,

Is perfect assurance that, awake or asleep,

God is always right there to tenderly keep.

All of His children ever safe in His care,

For God's here and He's there

and He's everywhere...

So into His hands each night as I sleep

I commend my soul for the dear Lord to keep,

Knowing that if my soul should take flight,

It will soar to the land where there is no night.

In Wisdom You Have Made Them All

Bless affectionately, gratefully praise the Lord, O my soul!

O Lord, my God, You are very great!  You are clothed with honor and majesty-

You are the One Who covers Yourself with light as with a garment,

Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain or a tent.

Who lays the beams of the upper room of His abode

 in the waters above the firmament,

 Who makes the clouds His chariots,  Who walks on the wings of the wind.

Who makes winds His messengers,  flames of fire His ministers.

You laid the foundation of the earth, that it should not be moved forever.

You covered it with the deep as with a garment;

 the waters stood above the mountains.

At Your rebuke they fled; at the voice of Your thunder they hastened away.

The mountains rose, the valleys sank down

 to the place which You appointed for them.

You have set a boundary for the waters

 which they may not pass over,

that they turn not again to deluge the earth.

He sends forth springs into the valleys;

 their waters run among the mountains.

They give drink to every wild beast of the field;

the wild asses quench their thirst there.

Beside them the birds of the heavens have their nests;

they sing among the branches.

He waters the mountains from His upper rooms;

the earth is satisfied and abounds with the fruit of His works.

He causes vegetation to grow for the cattle,

and all that the earth produces for man to cultivate

 that he may bring forth fruit out of the earth-

And wine that gladdens the heart of man,

 to make his face shine more than oil,

and bread to support, refresh, and strengthen man's heart.

The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly and are filled with sap,

 the cedars of Lebanon which He has planted.

Where the birds make their nests;

 as for the stork, the fir trees are her house.

The high mountains are for the wild goats;

the rocks are a refuge for the conies and badgers,

The Lord appointed the moon for the seasons;

 the sun knows the exact time of its setting.

You, O Lord, make darkness and it becomes night;

 in which creeps forth every wild beast of the forest.

The young lions roar after their prey and seek their food from God.

When the sun arises, they withdraw themselves and lie down in their dens.

Man goes forth to his work and remains at his task until evening.

O Lord, how many and varied are Your works!

In wisdom You have made them all;

the earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures.

Yonder is the sea, great and wide, in which are swarms of

innumerable creeping things, creatures both small and great.

There go the ships of the sea, and Leviathan, the sea monster,

which
You have formed to sport in it.

These all wait and are dependent upon You,

 that You may give them food in due season.

When You give it to them, they gather it up;

You open Your hand,  and they are filled with good things.

When You hide Your face, they are troubled and dismayed;

 when You take away their breath, they die and return to the dust.

When You send forth Your Spirit and give them breath,

 they are created and You replenish the face of the ground.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever;

may the Lord rejoice in His works-

Who looks on the earth, and it quakes and trembles,

Who touches the mountains, and they smoke!

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

I will sing praises to my God while I have any being.

May my meditation be sweet to Him;

as for me, I will rejoice in the Lord.

Let sinners be consumed from the earth,

and let the wicked be no more.

Bless, affectionately, gratefully praise the Lord, O my soul!

Praise the Lord!   Hallelujah!

Psalm 104

The Salt Of The Covenant

"Every cereal offering you shall season with salt,
symbol of preservation; neither shall you allow the
salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your
 cereal offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt."
(Leviticus 2:13)

"For everyone shall be salted with fire. Salt is good,
beneficial, but if salt has lost it's saltiness, how will
you restore the saltness to it?  Have salt within
yourselves and be at peace and live in
harm
ony with one another."
(Mark 9: 49, 50)

"It appears, then, that salt was THE SYMBOL OF THE COVENANT.

When God made a covenant with David, it is written: "The Lord gave
the kingdom to David forever by a covenant with salt"-by which was meant
that it was an unchangeable, incorruptible covenant, which would endure as
salt makes a thing to endure, so that it is not liable to putrefy or corrupt.

"The Salt of the Covenant" signifies that, whenever you and I are bringing
 any offering to the Lord, we must take care that we remember the covenant.
Standing at the altar with our gift, serving God with our daily service, as I trust
 we are doing, let us continually offer the salt of the covenant with all our sacrifices.

Here is a man who is doing good works in order to be saved. You are under
the wrong covenant, my friend, you are under the covenant of works, and all
that you will gain in that way is a curse, for, "Cursed is everyone that
continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them".
(Galatians 3:10)

"Therefore," says the apostle Paul, "as many as are the works of the law are
under a curse."  Get away from that, and get to that other covenant which has
salt in it, namely, the covenant of grace, the new covenant, of which Christ is
the Head.  We must not come to God without the salt of faith in Christ, or
our offerings will be sort of antichrist.

A man who is trying to save himself is in opposition to the Saviour. He
that thinks of the merits of his own good works despises the merit of the
finished work of Christ.  He is offering to God that which has no salt
in it, and cannot be received.

We want this salt of the covenant in all we do, in the first place, to
preserve us from falling into legality. He that serves God for wages
   forgets the word-"The gift of God is eternal life."

 It is not wages, but the gift, in which you are to live.

 If you forget that you are under a covenant of pure grace,
 in which God gives to the unworthy, and saves those who have
no claim to any covenant blessing, you will get on legal ground
and once on legal ground, God cannot accept your sacrifice.

With all thine offerings thou shalt offer the salt of the covenant
of grace, lest thou be guilty of legality in thy offering.

The covenant is to be remembered also that it may excite gratitude.
Whenever I think of God entering into covenant, that he will not depart
from me, and I shall never depart from him, my love for him overflows.
Nothing constrains me to such activity, and such zeal in the cause of God,
as a sense of covenant love.  Oh, the gratitude one feels for everything
which comes to us by the covenant of grace!"

Growing in our garden,

Who made a dress so fair

For you to wear?

Who made you straight and tall

To give pleasure to us all?

O, lovely lily,

Who did it all?

Oh, little children,

God made this dress so fair

For us to wear

God made us straight and tall

To give pleasure to you all.

Born in the small village of Millisle, County Down Ireland,
Amy Carmichael served the Lord in India for 55 years.

Upon arrival there, she soon learned of the enslavement
  of little boys and girls within Hindu temples. Children
were sold into prostitution and often forced to
 marry Brahmin temple priests.

Horrified by this evil practice, Amy devoted her life's work to
rescue children from the temples, often posing great risk to
 her own life.  To secure a successful rescue, she would often
 darkened her skin with tea and dress like a Hindu woman.

Over the years, her mission house in Dohnavur, in south India,
became a place of safe haven for hundreds of children.

A bird bath under a tree there stands in memory of this
  remarkable woman of faith, whose persistence and tireless
 efforts in serving her Master, eventually led to India
passing a law to protect children from sex slavery.

"When I consider the cross of Christ, how can anything
 that I do be called sacrifice," Amy once said.

Her legacy lives on in India where the Dohnavur Fellowship
continues to protect and rescue children caught in dangerous situations.

PSALM 115

Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory, for Your mercy
 and loving-kindness and for the sake of Your truth and faithfulness!

Why should the nations say, "Where now is their God?"

But our God is in heaven: He does whatever He pleases.

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.

They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;

They have ears, but they hear not; noses have they, but they smell not;

They have hands, but they handle not; feet have they, but they walk not;
neither can they make a sound with their throats.

They who make idols are like them, so are all who trust and lean on them.

O Israel, trust and take refuge in the Lord!

 He is their Help and their Shield.

O house of Aaron, the priesthood, trust in and lean on the Lord!

He is their Help and their Shield.

You who reverently fear the Lord, trust in and lean on the Lord!

He is their Help and their Shield.

The Lord has been mindful of us,  He will bless us,

He will bless the house of Israel,   He will bless the house of Aaron.

He will bless those who reverently and worshipfully fear the Lord, both great and small.

May the Lord give you increase more and more, you and your children.

May you be blessed of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth!

The heavens are the Lord's heavens, but the earth He has given to the children of men.

The dead praise not the Lord, neither any who go down into silence.

But we will bless and gratefully praise the Lord from this time forth and forever.

Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!

IN THIS TIME OF NATIONAL STRIFE...

"Wherefore should the heathen say, "Where is now their God?" Or more literally,
"Where, pray, is their God?"  Why should the nations be allowed with a sneer
of contempt to question the existence, and mercy, and faithfulness of Jehovah?
They are always ready to blaspheme; we may well pray that they may not
derive a reason for so doing from the course of providence
or the decline of the church.

When they see the godly down-trodden while they themselves live at ease,
and act the part of persecutors, they are very apt to speak as if they had triumphed
over God Himself, or as if He had altogether left the field of action and deserted
His saints.  When the prayers and tears of the godly seem to be unregarded,
and their miseries are rather increased than assuaged, then do the wicked
multiply their taunts and jeers, and even argue that their own wretched
irreligion is better than the faith of Christians, because for the present
their condition is so much preferable to that of the afflicted saints.

And truly, this is the very sting of the trials of God's chosen when they see
the veracity of the Lord questioned, and the name of God profaned because
of their sufferings. If they could hope that some good result would come out
of all this they would endure it with patience, but they are unable to perceive
any desirable result consequent thereon; they enquire with holy anxiety,
"Wherefore should the heathen be permitted to speak thus?"

It is a question to which it would be hard to reply, and yet no doubt,
there is an answer.  Sometimes the nations are permitted to blaspheme,
in order that they may fill up the measure of their iniquity, and in order
that their subsequent interposition of God may be rendered the more
illustrious in contrast with their profane boasting.

Do they say, "Where is now their God?"   They shall know, by and by, for
it is written: "Ah, I will ease Me of Mine adversaries"; they shall know it when
the righteous shall "shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father."

Do they say, "Where is the promise of His coming?"
That coming shall be speedy and terrible to them.

In our own case, by our own lukewarmness and the neglect of faithful
gospel preaching, we have permitted the uprise and spread of modern doubt,
and we are bound to confess it with deep sorrow of soul, yet, we may not
therefore lose heart, but may still plead with God to save His own truth
and grace from the contempt of men of the world.

Our honor and the honor of the church are small matters, but the glory of God
is the jewel of the universe, of which all else is but a setting, and we may come
to the Lord and plead His jealousy for His name, being well assured that He
will not suffer that Name to be dishonored.

Wherefore should the pretended wise men of the period be permitted to say
that they doubt the personality of God?  Wherefore should they say that answers
to prayer are pious delusions, and that the resurrection and the deity of our
Lord Jesus are moot points?  Wherefore, should they be permitted to speak
disparagingly of atonement by blood and by price, and reject utterly the
doctrine of the wrath of God against sin, even that wrath
which burneth forever and ever?

They speak exceeding proudly, and only God can stop their blusterings;
let us by extraordinary intercession prevail upon Him to interpose, by
giving His gospel such a triumphant vindication as shall utterly silence
the perverse opposition of ungodly men."

A PRAYER OF INTERCESSION...

"As we entreat Thy favor and aid, that Thou wouldst work gloriously
on our behalf, to bring us out of our present straits and extremities;
so we do not desire this out of vain-glorious humor, as usually men
do in such cases; that we may get renown by the conquest of our
proud and mighty enemies, but that Thy honor may be vindicated
from all their contempt and blasphemies, and if Thou wilt deliver
us, we will not arrogate the praise and glory of it to our own
worth or valor, but only to Thy mercy and truth."
In Jesus Christ our Lord we pray.
Amen.

 rushing to reunite with Rome, knowing the controversial beliefs
and statements made by the present Pope Francis.

Surely the Vatican will play a significant role in
the forthcoming one-world religion.

Safely Home

  "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent
 from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
(2 Corinthians 5:8)

"Safely Home"

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;

Oh, so happy and so bright!

There is perfect joy and beauty

In this everlasting light.

All pain and grief is over,

Every restless tossing passed;

I am now at peace forever,

Safely home in Heaven at last.

Do you wonder I so calmly

Trod the valley of the shade

Oh! But Jesus love illumined

Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me

In that way so hard to tread;

And with Jesus' arm to lean on,

Could I have one doubt, dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,

For I love you dearly still:

Try to look beyond earth's shadows

Pray to trust our Father's will.

There is work still waiting for you,

So you must not idly stand;

Do it now, while life remaineth

You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When the work is all completed,

He will gently call you home;

Oh, the rapture of that meeting,

Oh, the joy to see you come!

A Glorious Reunion

On the evening of June 25th, enveloped by the love of her family and prayers
of so many, Iris passed into eternal Glory reunited with Les once again.

Her early struggles with diabetes and kidney failure ended when the Lord,
 in all His wonderful Grace, took her home at the age of 91.

She spent her life serving her Lord, Les, her family and the countless
thousands around the country with whom she fellowshipped regularly.

The Lord ministered His grace and love to others through her hands,
feet, and sweet words.  Her kindness, thoughtfulness and concern
for others was always evident.

We remember her wisdom in these words:
 "The Lord is in the details" and "God always has a plan".

My thoughts and prayers are with the Feldick family.
May God comfort you with His strength and His peace
in the loss of your mother.

Flashback Friday: This Guy's In Love With You

In an episode of the A&E series, "Biography" featuring songwriter Burt Bacharach,
he was visited in his office one day by Herb Alpert who asked, "Say, Burt do you happen
to have any old compositions lying around that you and Hal have never recorded?
 May be one I might be able to use?"  Alpert was in the habit of asking songwriters
 about unused song material in hope of finding a "lost pearl".   Bacharach just
 happened to find the perfect "lost pearl" in his office filing cabinet that day
and offered it Alpert, saying, "Here Herb, you might like this one."

And the rest, as they say, is history.

"This Guy's In Love With You" was one of the most popular songs
in America this second week of July in 1968.

Friday Focus: Keeping Promises

"The Lord said to Moses, "Tell Aaron your brother he must not
come at all times into the Holy of Holies within the veil before
the mercy seat upon the ark, lest he die (as his sons did after
offering false fire before the Lord) for I will appear in
the cloud on the mercy seat."
(Leviticus 16:2)

"The Lord has sworn and will not revoke or change it;
You are a priest forever, after the manner
 and order of Melchizedek."
(Psalm 110:4)

"Accordingly, God also, in His desire to show more convincingly
and beyond doubt to those who were to inherit the promise the
unchangeableness of His purpose and plan, intervened with an oath.

This was so that, by two unchangeable things, His promise and His oath,
in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false or deceive us, we
who have fled to Him for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength
and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed
 for us and set before us.

Now we have this hope as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul,
it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps out upon it-
a hope that reaches farther and enters into the very certainty of the
Presence within the veil.

Where Jesus has entered in for us, in advance, a Forerunner,
having become a High Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
(Hebrews 6:17-20)

Did anyone ever tell you that they would do something for you
that needed to be done, and then they didn't do it? Did anyone ever
promise you something and then break that promise?  Were you
ever lied to?  Did you ever count on someone for support, and
then just when you need it you found that your friend was not
in a position to give that support?

Did you ever read a brochure about a vacation spot, and when
you got there found that the modern cabin in the photograph
 was the only one at the place and it was occupied?

If these situations ring a bell with you, then you know
what it is like to be disillusioned or deceived.

Deception-what a disabling, evil element. Falsehood, misrepresentation,
fabrication, dishonesty, fraud-all synonymous with deception.

 I have used these words to illustrate what God is not.

We tend to be skeptical because of past experiences.  We want
everything proven to us before we believe. Why? Because we may
have believed something once too often, and been deceived one
time too many.  We are more acquainted with lies than the truth.

God knows that we are more apt to be skeptical than believing.
Yet we remain gullible and vulnerable.  He knows that even with
the intense conditioning most of us have had, we want to believe.

We are immensely relieved when we can find an honest friend
whom we can trust. God can be to us that friend.

Listen to His words from Hebrews 6:18:

"It is impossible for God to lie."  Think about it-impossible.

When God makes a promise, you can count on Him to keep it.
