A TIDE of sun and song in beauty broke

Against a bitter heart, where no voice woke

Till thus it spoke:-

What was it, in the old time that I know,

That made the world with inner beauty glow,

Now a vain show?

Still dance the shadows on the grass at play,

Still move the clouds like great, calm thoughts away,

Nor haste, nor stay.

But I have lost that breath within the gale,

The light to which the daylight was a veil,

The star-shine pale.

Still all the summer with its songs is filled,

But that delicious undertone they held-

Why is it stilled?

Then I took heart that I would find again

the voices that had long in silence lain,

Nor live in vain.

I stood at noonday in the hollow wind,

Listened at midnight, straining heart and mind

If I might find!

But all in vain I sought, at eve and morn,

On sunny seas, in dripping woods forlorn,

Till tired and worn,

One day I left my solitary tent

And down into the world's bright garden went,

On labor bent.

The dew stars and the buds about my feet

began their old bright message to repeat,

In odors sweet;

And as I worked at weed and root in glee,

Now humming and now whistling cheerily,

It came to me,-

The secret of the glory that was fled

Shone like a sweep of sun all overhead,

And something said,-

"The blessing came because it was not sought;

There was no care if thou wert blest or not;

The beauty and the wonder all thy thought,

Thyself forgot."

Flashback Friday: When I Fall In Love

The beautiful song, "When I Fall In Love" was written by composer Victor Young
with lyrics by Edward Heyman and first introduced as the theme song for
Howard Hughes' 1952  Korean War romance drama, "One Minute To Zero".

Although many people are familiar with legendary crooner Nat King Cole's
smooth rendition of this song, the very first hit version was recorded by
the lovely vocals of singer-actress Doris Day 74 years ago
this week on June 5, 1952.

Friday Focus: Remember The Sabbath

"For the sweetness of life lies in usefulness,
like honey deep in the heart of a clover bloom."

The whole world was a deep, dark blue,  for I had waked with a grouch that
morning. While blue is without doubt a heavenly color, it is better in skies
than one's mind; for when the blues descend upon a poor mortal on earth,
life seems far from being worth living.

I didn't want to help with the chores; I hated to get breakfast; and the
prospect of doing up the morning's work afterwards was positively revolting.
Beginning with the usual round of duties-under protest- I had a great many
thoughts about work and none of them was complimentary to the habit. But
presently, my mind took a wider range and became less personal as applied
to the day just beginning. First I remembered the old, old labor law:

"Six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the
sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt no do any work."
(Exodus 20:9-10)

It used to be impressed upon us as most important that we must rest on
the seventh day. We may not "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy"
(Exodus 20:8) but we'll not forget to stop working. With our present
attitude toward work, the emphasis should be upon "Six days thou
shalt labor," and if we stick it out to work the six days, we will
rest on the seventh without any urging.

Given half a chance, we'll take Saturday off also and any other day or
part of the day we can manage to sneak, besides which the length of
a work day is shrinking and shrinking for everyone except farmers,
and they are hoping to shorten theirs.

"In all labour there is profit; but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury."
(Proverbs 14:23)

But really the old way was best, for it takes about six days of work to give
just the right flavor to a day off. As I thought of all these things, insensibly,
my ideas about work changed. I remember the time of enforced idleness
when recovering from an illness and how I longed to be busily at work again.

Also, I recollected a week of vacation that I once devoted to pleasure during
which I suffered more than the weariness of working while I had none of its
satisfaction. For there is a great satisfaction in work well done, the thrill of
success in a task accomplished.

I got the thrill at the moment that my mind reached the climax. The separator
was washed. It was a job I especially dislike, but, while my mind had been busy
far afield, my hands performed their accustomed task with none of the usual sense
of unpleasantness, showing that, after all, it is not so much the work we do with
our bodies that makes us tired and dissatisfied as the work we do with our minds.

We have been, for so long, thinking of labor as a curse upon man, that because
of our persistently thinking of it as such, it has very nearly become so.

There has always been a great deal of misplaced pity for Adam because of his
sentence to hard labor for life when really that was all that saved him after
he was deported from paradise, and it is the only thing that has kept
his descendants as safe and sane even as they are.

"Go to the ant, thou sluggard, consider her ways, and be wise; which having
no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth
her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt
thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little
folding of the hands to sleep; so shall thy poverty come as one that
travelleth, and thy want as an armed man."
(Proverbs 6:6-11)

There is nothing wrong with God's plan that man should earn his bread
by the sweat of his brow. The wrong is in our own position only. In trying
to shirk while we "let George do it," we bring upon ourselves our own
punishment; for in the attitude we take toward our work, we make of it
a burden instead of the blessing it might be.

Work is like other good things in that it should not be indulged in to excess,
but a reasonable amount that is of value to one's self and to the world, as is
any honest, well-directed labor, need never descend into drudgery.

It is a tonic and an inspiration and a reward unto itself. For the sweetness
of life lies in usefulness, like honey deep in the heart of a clover bloom.

Wednesday's Word: Selah/ "Pause"

"Let be and be still, and know, recognize and understand that I am God. I will
be exalted among the nations!  I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts
is with us; the God of Jacob is our Refuge, our High Tower and Stronghold.
Selah, pause and calmly think of that!"
(Psalm 46:10-11)

 Beautiful Heliotrope Flowers In Bloom

Summer flowers, like the lovely, old-fashioned Heliotrope, are an awesome
display of the intricate, "down to the last detail" artistry of the Creator's power.
They remind believers of the beauty and brevity of life, the assurance of God's
provision, and the surety of His eternal promises.

The Hebrew word, "Selah" pronounced (say-lah) appears often in the Book of Psalms,
and encourages the reader to carefully pause to consider or reflect upon the glorious,
eternal nature of God . Often, when a  particular verse of Scripture captures our
attention, God is speaking directly to us, though we may not realize it at first.

I clearly remember the day when I had to take my beloved dog, Mariah, to
be put to sleep after she developed cancerous tumors in her abdomen. She
could barely walk and I had all I could do to put her in the car and drive
to the local animal hospital.  Although the veterinarian tried to reassure
me that I was doing the right thing for her,  it was one of the hardest
moments of my life. I never felt so alone and guilty, thinking
if only I had not been preoccupied with other things...if only I
had noticed Mariah's worsening condition sooner...if only...

Afterwards,  driving back home I was so blinded by tears that I could
hardly see the road in front of me.  When I finally reached home again,
the first thing I did was grab my Bible and sit down on the living room
couch. Closing my eyes, I asked God to speak to me through His Word,
to let me know that I had done the right thing for Mariah.

As I opened the front cover of my Bible, the pages fell open to Psalm 84.
The words of this lovely song seemed to leap out at me as I read the following
verse: "Yes, the sparrow has found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young-even Your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God."
(Psalm 84:3)

"...even Your altars..." I quickly read these words again, and I realized
that God was not only speaking directly to me, but, He was comforting
my broken heart with the assurance that my beloved Mariah was with
Him now. My faithful pet and friend, like the sparrow and the swallow,
had found a place of rest for herself on His altars.

Monday Meditation: More Myself

"I have been crucified with Christ, in Him I have shared His crucifixion;
it is no longer I who live, but Christ the Messiah lives in me;and the life
I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God,
Who loved me, and gave Himself up for me."
(Galatians 2:20)

CHRISTIANITY isn't a narcotic that dulls you into obedience.

It involves battle-it's excruciating to give up control.

But that is why we must not feel despair if we are struggling.
To struggle does not mean we are incorrigible. It means we are alive!

A disciple says, "I hear You, Lord.  It's the nuttiest thing I ever heard of.
It's risky. I'll look like a fool, but I'll do it. Because my life is no longer
committed to doing my thing but Your thing."

Heaven will not be filled with innocent people, running around and saying,
"Oh, there was another way? I guess I never noticed."  Rather, they will say,
"You bet there were other options that begged to control me. By God's grace
and my struggle, Jesus is my Lord."

Is Jesus' desire to be the Lord of our lives some little fetish of His?
Why is it so important to Him? Why should we want Him to have
control of our lives? Besides the fact that He deserves it because
of who He is, He knows He is the only one in the universe who
can control us without destroying us.

No one will ever love you like Jesus.

No one will ever know you better, care more for your wholeness.

The last breath Jesus breathed on this planet was for you.

Jesus will meet you wherever you are and He will help you.

He is not intimidated by past failures, broken promises, or wounds.
He will make sense out of your brokenness. But He can only begin to be
the Lord of your life today, not next Monday, or next month, but now.
And the great and joyful paradox is that while He totally transforms us,
He makes us more ourselves than ever before.

The Democratic-sponsored, "Reproductive Rights and Trans Rights Bill" SS260
passed last week in the NJ Senate 23-12 along party lines. Two Democrats
and two Republicans were absent, while one Republican member abstained.

As the New Jersey Monitor reports, "The bill would create a new crime of
interfering with reproductive healthcare services and expand the definition of
those services to include healthcare for trans patients, building on existing laws
designed to shield abortion clinics, staff, volunteers, and patients from violence
and harassment. Advocates said additional protections are needed given the
Trump Administration's efforts to curtail these services."

However, a statement released the same day by the NJ Republican Caucus states:

"This bill is dangerously vague, unfairly subjective, and represents a direct threat to
the constitutional protections guaranteed under the First Amendment. No one should
face criminal punishment because another person subjectively interprets words, opinions,
or political viewpoints as emotionally distressing. The bill's broad language creates a
chilling effect on public discourse and opens the door to government overreach.

Free speech is one of the foundational rights upon which this nation was built,
especially speech that may be unpopular, controversial, or offensive to some.
Once government is empowered to criminalize expression based on emotional
reaction rather than clear criminal conduct, every citizen's right are at risk.
New Jersey residents expect lawmakers to focus on the cost of living,
public safety, and improving quality of life, not advancing legislation
 that undermines constitutional freedoms."

This new law also violates the rights of citizens as guaranteed under
the New Jersey State Constitution: Article 1:4 clearly states: "Every
person may freely speak, write, and publish his sentiments on all
subjects, being responsible for the abuse of that right. No law shall
be passed to restrain or abridge the liberty of speech or of the press."

Although the primary sponsors of this legislation claim that it is
necessary to protect doctors as well as patients seeking to have an
abortion or a trans-surgery from being threatened by  protesters
blocking the entrances or restraining someone from entering a
facility which performs these procedures, the total number of
abortions has significantly increased in our state every year
since the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in 2022.

"Since the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, New Jersey lawmakers have codified abortion
rights and enacted other protections for both patients and providers,"  reports the Philly Voice
in an article published in January, 2026. This included passing a "shield law" to prevent
states that ban or restrict the procedure from holding out-of-state patients
and their New Jersey-based providers criminally or civilly liable for abortions.

Marie Tasy of New Jersey Right to Life claims that abortion is rising in New Jersey,
because "the state keeps pouring hundreds of millions of taxpayer money into providers that
perform abortions, while targeting pregnancy-resource centers that offer women real choices.
The surge in abortions here are a tragic reminder that our policies aren't just wrong,
they're perverse, she added. It's a number to be mourned, not celebrated."

Her statement regarding the state targeting pregnancy centers brings to mind the
current New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, who is continuing what
seems to be a personal and vindictive crusade against a faith-based, pregnancy
resource center in New Jersey.

Despite a recent Supreme Court ruling in the center's favor over the state's violation
of their First Amendment rights, First Choice Pregnancy Resource Center
is still being unduly harassed by AG Davenport.

As Alliance Defending Freedom reports:  "For more than two years, New Jersey state
officials have targeted First Choice simply because they dislike its pro-life views."

First Choice offers women facing an unplanned pregnancy the very best of care,
no-cost health services, including ultrasounds, as well as compassionate, non-judgmental
counseling and education classes.  They want their clients to know and to understand
that they have an alternative choice to abortion, and can make an informed choice
in the best interests for themselves and their unborn child.  While the State of
New Jersey has failed miserably in protecting women and children, First Choice,
and other faith-based pregnancy centers here, are making life better for all
concerned, including the offer of counseling to perspective fathers-to-be!

This leads me back to consider the above clause regarding freedom
of speech in New Jersey, and in particular, the words that declare
that it is a citizen's duty in "being responsible for the abuse of
that right."  Does A.G. Davenport even know what this means?

NJ Constitution Art. VII Sect:1 Para:1 states: "Every State officer before taking office
must take and subscribe an oath or affirmation to support the Constitution of this State
and of the United States and to perform the duties of his (or her) office faithfully,
impartially, and justly to the best of his (or her) ability."

Unfortunately, protecting freedom of speech in New Jersey now seems irrelevant
to many of our elected officials in Trenton, as does the need for impartiality, in
what is now designated as an "abortion and trans refugee sanctuary state".

Satan is not only a master deceiver, but, one of his greatest weapons
is appealing to fallen human beings through their emotions.

Scripture tells us that he appears as an "angel of light". However, not everything
Satan does is bad or makes bad things happen. At least, not at first. Sometimes, he
can initiate something which appears to be good and beneficial, or serves to
"enlighten" the minds of people into thinking they are doing something good
for others or for the benefit of society.  But it is all a big lie.

The Lord Jesus Christ warned us about the nature of Satan.

"He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth because
there is no truth in him. When he speaks a falsehood, he speaks what is natural
to him, for he himself is a liar and the father of lies and all that is false."
(John 8:44)

As the god of this world, Satan knows he is running out of time. He knows that
he will not be able to stop the plans and purposes of God, so he is concentrating
all his efforts on destroying God’s greatest creation, mankind, through lies and
deceptions, and especially, the kind which prey on human emotions.

If he can convince people to believe that an unborn baby is not really a human being,
created in the very likeness and image of God Himself, and that aborting an unborn child
is the mother's right, or, that someone who identifies as trans-gender was not born
the sex which God made them, or entice those holding political office to believe that
they are above the laws of both God and man, and can misuse their authority to
pass legislation which protects the guilty, while punishing the innocent, then
they have succeeded in giving Satan what he truly craves, allegiance and worship.

And in turn, as the Lord warned us, the enemy, who has been a murderer
from the very beginning, will ultimately target their souls for destruction.

Fortunately, there is still hope in this lost and fallen world if people
choose to place their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

"But, when anyone turns in repentance to the Lord, the veil is
stripped off and taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit and where
the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, emancipation from bondage."
(2 Corinthians 3:16-17)

Saturday Poetry Corner: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow

Yesterday's dead, tomorrow's unborn,

So there's nothing to fear and nothing to mourn,

For all that is past and all that has been

Can never return to be lived once again...

And what lies ahead or the things that will be

Are still in God's hands, so it is not up to me.

To live in the future that is God's great unknown,

For the past and the present God claims for His own...

All I need to do is to live for today

And trust God to show me the truth and the way.

For it's only the memory of things that have been

And expecting tomorrow to bring trouble again

That fills my today, which God wants to bless,

With uncertain fears and borrowed distress...

For all I need live for is this one little minute,

For life's here and now and eternity's in it.

Flashback Friday: Everything Is Beautiful

A departure from the many zany songs often sang by the great American country
music singer-songwriter/comedian Ray Stevens, the uplifting, "Everything Is Beautiful"
reached the Number #1 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week on May 27, 1970.

The children heard singing, "Jesus Loves The Little Children" in the beginning,
and throughout the song included Ray's two daughters, Suzi and Timi, and
the choir from the Oak Hill Elementary School in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ray Stevens won the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his beautiful song
at the 1971 Grammy Awards.  A well deserved honor for a talented entertainer!
