Flashback Friday: Sunshine On My Shoulders

Originally written for his 1971 album, "Poems, Prayers, & Promises" John Denver's
iconic song, "Sunshine On My Shoulders" was released as a single in May, 1973
and became one of the most memorable songs of the decade.

The song began receiving significant air play on Adult Contemporary radio
stations at a time in America when the Vietnam War was ending, and reached
the Number One slot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in early 1974.

Cash Box called the song, "A soft, tender ballad equal to the task and the
pretty lyrics come shining through as a result.  A good remedy for relaxation
in these troubled times."   And for these troubled times in our nation today.

America At 250: Decoration Day/ Flowers For The Brave

On these sacred mounds to lay;
O'er the tombs of fallen heroes
Float the stars and stripes today."

"What We Would Have In The Community We Must Put Into The Schools."

The beautiful custom of decorating the graves of soldiers should have its lessons
for the schools. Decoration Day committees may secure an ample supply of bouquets
if they will adopt the plan of certain Grand Army Posts in the larger cities.

Instead of requesting donations of flowers from the citizens at large, all the schools of the
village, town, or city, may be listed in the good work of providing them, representatives
of the committees visiting the various schools some days before the flowers are wanted
and speaking of the propriety of the children's doing what they can to furnish them.

The boys and girls will at once be interested. The bouquets may be brought to schools
on the afternoon proceeding Decoration Day, to be called for by local committees.
Thousands of bouquets may thus be obtained. The entire locality is laid under
contribution for flowers, and in the most effective way possible.

The children-each boy or girl-has done something, or, has decided that he or she can
do nothing, for the observance of the day-and thus, has come into personal contact
with the thought of gratitude due, and honor, paid, to the patriotic dead.

The teachers call the attention of their schools to the meaning of the day, under
circumstances most favorable to producing a lasting impression. The story of war
is retold; the meaning of the great struggle is taught as the lesson of the hour;
and in every way the result is profitable for all.
-J.P McCaskey

Decoration Day is now called Memorial Day and observed
every year on the last Monday of the month of May.

Decorating the graves of the war dead began in the aftermath of the American Civil War.
One of the first occurred in Columbus, Mississippi on April 25, 1866 when a group
of women, many widows, mothers, sisters, and daughters, visited a cemetery to
decorate the graves of  Confederate soldiers who fell in the Battle of Shiloh.

While in the cemetery grounds, the women noticed, and became disturbed by
the sight of the neglected graves of the Union soldiers there. They decided
to decorate the graves of these men as well.  Thus, Decoration Day became
part of the healing process within a nation recently torn apart by war.

Thursday's Thoughts: Living With Fear

When I was a young minister's wife and new mother, I suffered from
a serious case of low self-image and overcautiousness.  Perhaps, more
accurately, I could have been called fearful and anxious. It was very
difficult for me to speak to a group of more than seven or eight ladies.

When asked to speak, I would often hide behind my husband's ministerial cloak
and say that he was the speaker and I was his "helpmeet".  Mainly because I
was fearful that I would make a mistake and not be accepted by my listeners,
I would refuse an invitation to speak to adults. I was only comfortable working
with children in church school and in the music department of our church.

In my heart I admired those who were poised in public and could speak articulately,
and often I longed to be able to do so myself. But the more I thought about it, the
greater my fear. This anxiety affected other areas of my life as well. I knew that
sooner or later I would have to face this fear head-on. After seventeen years
as a minister's wife, I came to realize that I did not have to continue like this.
Living with fear was a choice I was making.

While attending a church school conference at beautiful Forest Home Christian Camp
in California, God used Dr. Henry Brandt, a Christian psychologist, to minister His
truth to me. Dr. Brandt used 2 Timothy 1:7 as his text, and that day, for the first time,
I began to realize that my fears and anxieties were self-imposed.

God's choice for me was to have power, love, and self-discipline. God did not give
me a spirit of fear!  My poor self-image, my anxieties, my fears were all my own
doing and my sin because I lacked faith to receive the power, love,
and self-discipline that God really wanted me to have.

As God began to help me with my fearfulness, my own self-image began to improve.
Over a period of weeks, and then months, it began to be obvious that God was changing me.

Now, many years later, I can say, "Thank You, Lord" for what He has done in me.
I would not want to go back to the former Beverly for anything in the world-
and the greatest thing is that God is not finished with me yet!

Tasting History's Max Miller recounts the tragic story of the Great Molasses Flood,
which washed through Boston, Massachusetts in the winter of 1919, knocking
buildings off their foundation and smothering men, women, and children
caught up in the huge wave of hot molasses pouring through the streets.

"Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,
that in due time He may exalt you. Casting the whole of your care,

on Him for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully."

A Maskil of David

Listen to my prayer, O God,

and do not ignore my plea.

Attend to me and answer me.

I am restless in my complaint,

and distraught at the voice of the enemy,

at the pressure of the wicked.

For they bring down disaster upon me

and resent me in their anger.

My heart pounds within me,

and the terrors of death assail me.

Fear and trembling grip me,

and horror has overwhelmed me.

I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove!

I would fly away and find rest.

How far away I would flee!

In the wilderness I would remain.

Selah
(Pause and calmly think of that!)

I would hurry to my shelter,

far from this raging tempest."

But I call to God

and the LORD saves me.

Morning, noon, and night,

I cry out in distress,

and He hears my voice.

He redeems my soul in peace

from the battle waged against me,

even though many oppose me.

God will hear and humiliate them-

the One enthroned for the ages-

because the do not change

and they have no fear of God.

Cast your burden upon the LORD

and He will sustain you;

He will never let the righteous be shaken.

( PSALM 55:1-8; 16, 17, 18, 19, 22)

Monday Meditation: Lord, In The Strength Of Grace

"Gold for the uses of gold, silver for the uses of silver, and for every work
to be done by craftsmen. Now who will offer willingly to fill their hand and
consecrate it today to the Lord like one consecrating himself to the priesthood?
(1 Chronicles 29:5)

"Therefore I urge you, brethren, on account of God's mercy, to offer your bodies
as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."

Lord, in the strength of grace,

With a glad heart and free,

Myself, my residue of days,

I consecrate to Thee.

Thy ransomed servant, I

Restore to thee Thy own;

And, from this moment, live or die

To serve my God alone.

The Feast of Shavuot begins this year at sunset on Thursday May 21, 2026 until
nightfall on Saturday May 23, 2026.  In Israel, this important time coincides
with the date that God gave the Torah (Law) to Israel on Mount Sinai
more than 3,000 years ago.

Pentecost is known as the Jewish Feast of Weeks, (Shavuot) and will
take place on the following Sunday May, 24th, 2026.   Occurring fifty days
after Easter, it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples
waiting in the Upper Room and the beginning of the early Church.

In this special ministry update, Rabbi Zev Porat reports that the Holy Spirit is
descending on Jerusalem and into the hearts of many Jewish people hungry
for the Word of God and who are coming to know the true Messiah-Yeshua!

Please pray for brother Zev as he witnesses the Good News of the Gospel
on the streets of Jerusalem, and for the salvation of Israel!

Thy Tender Mercies, O My Lord

"O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me: Your loving devotion
and faithfulness will always guard me."
(Psalm 40:11)

Thy tender mercies, O my Lord,

Withhold not, I implore;

But let Thy kindness and Thy truth

Preserve me evermore.

For countless ills have compassed me,

My sinful deeds arise;

Yea, they have overtaken me;

I dare not raise my eyes.

My sins are more than I can count,

My heart has failed for grief;

Be pleased, O Lord, to rescue me,

O haste to my relief.

Be those who seek to hurt my soul

Dismayed and put to flight,

And they themselves be put to shame

Who in my woe delight.

Let all who seek Thee now rejoice,

Yea, glad in Thee abide,

And, loving Thy salvation, say,

The Lord be magnified,

My lowly state and bitter need

The Lord has not forgot;

Thou art my Savior and my help,

Come Lord, and tarry not.

A Matter Of Life Or Death: It's Your Choice, America

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you..."
(Jeremiah 1:5)

In what has come to be known as an "abortion sanctuary state" where women
can travel from other states to have an abortion, and where, under the current
law, she can have an abortion up to the third trimester, or right before the
baby is born, members of the New Jersey State legislature were seriously
considering the passage of a bill this week which contained the clause:

a fetus shall have no independent rights under the laws of this state.”

Thank God someone had the sense to reconsider and to remove this inhumane provision
which sounds a lot like a decree which might have been implemented in the days of
Nazi Germany.  And yet, what is the difference between the mindset of 21st century
lawmakers declaring that an unborn baby has no rights and therefore can be terminated
in the womb in New Jersey, and members of the Gestapo who would rip little Jewish
babies from their mothers' arms and toss them alive into the ovens at Auschwitz?

In the eyes of the most holy and righteous God there is no difference.

Murder is the deliberate and willful act of taking human life, and couching the hideous
practice of infanticide in political language as "reproductive healthcare" does not change
the fact that our legislators are as guilty of shedding innocent blood as the abortionists
doing the dirty work for them-at the expense of the already overburdened NJ taxpayers.

The 6th Commandment attests: "You shall not commit murder." (Exodus 20:13)

God further declares,  "Keep far from a false matter and be very careful not
to condemn to death the innocent and the righteous, for I will not justify
nor acquit the wicked."
  (Exodus 23:7)

Unlike disingenuous legislators masking their true intentions in political words
and phrases, God does not lie.  He does not change.  I often contemplate, with an
increasing sense of trepidation, how much longer the good Lord is going to hold
back His wrath and judgment on America, which He has blessed and been so very
gracious to in the past, a nation which claims to believe in personal liberty and
justice for all, and yet condones the murder of babies in the womb.

Living souls made in the likeness and image of God Himself.

Will the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, give America more time to seek
His mercy and forgiveness for this most grievous sin? Or will our fast
approaching 250th birthday as a nation be the last one that we will see?

"While a battle is raging, one can see his enemy mowed down by the thousands, or ten
thousand, with great composure; but after the battle these scenes are distressing, and one

It was so many years ago

Up on Champion Hill

That I heard the cannon roar

I can hear it still.

I had pledged to go to war

I had vowed to give my all

And that's just what I did

Up on Champion...

Up on Champion...

Up on Champion Hill!

Grant and Sherman came to fight

With the Union's might

They spread terror, they spread strife

Through the days and nights

Oh my darling, I loved you

Oh my darling, I was true.

But my heart is buried still

Up on Champion Hill.

Blue-clad armies to our fore

To our left and right

We charged at them, they fell back

But they counter-attacked

Gallant men fell everywhere

Bullets filled the springtime air.

One sent me to eternity

Up on Champion Hill.

Now I roam this bloodied land

Longing for what I missed

The precious hours, the treasured years

Spent in your midst.

Oh my darling I love you

Yes my darling, I'm still true

And it's here I wait for you

Up on Champion Hill.

"The Ghost of Champion Hill"
By Herb Phillips

The Battle of Champion Hill, fought on May 16, 1863 was a pivotal battle in
the Vicksburg campaign of the American Civil War.  Union Army commander
Major General Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of Tennessee pursued the retreating
Confederate States Army under Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton, which led
to it's defeat twenty miles east of Vicksburg, Mississippi. This victory for the Union
led to the Siege of Vicksburg, and the eventual surrender of the Confederate forces there.

Flashback Friday: Independence Day

"Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing,
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning..."

Considered the "Signature Song" of beautiful country music recording artist
Martina McBride, "Independence Day" tells the sad story of a little girl
whose home life is shattered by alcoholism and domestic violence.

In an act of desperation, her long victimized mother burns down the
family home, presumably with herself and her drunken husband inside,
after which the little girl left behind is sent to a county home.

Released on May 2, 1994 as the third single from her album, "The Way That I Am"
the lyrics of this song are described as having a double meaning, in that the girl's
mother finally gains her "independence" from her abusive father on
the 4th of July-America's Independence Day.

What makes this song especially thought provoking is that it mentions the
residents of the small town where the girl and her parents lived knew that
her father was a dangerous man and was abusing her mother and most
likely his daughter too, but these neighbors chose to look the other way.

"Independence Day" won the Country Music Association Award
for Song of the Year at the 1995 CMA Awards.

In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked the song at Number #45 on its list of
the 200 Greatest Country Songs of all time.

Wednesday's Word: Chayil/"Valor"

"The Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and said to him,
"The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior."
(Judges 6:12)

"Chayil" pronounced, "khah-yil" is a Hebrew word found throughout the
Old Testament, and denotes a rich, multidimensional concept of strength,
valor, and capability. It is often used in describing the mindset of a
warrior or a mighty character.

Like the victorious Gideon in Israel's battle against the Midianites,
the true warrior of God seeks first His counsel, is obedient to Him,
and relies on His strength rather than their own.

"The LORD will go forth like a mighty man, He will rouse up His zealous
indignation and vengeance like a warrior; He will cry, yes, He will shout aloud.
He will do mightily against His enemies."
(Isaiah 42:13)

In the ever increasing darkness of this world, where God's truth is consistently under
attack, or, has been replaced by lies and apostasy, believers in Christ are called to be
valiant warriors in our daily walk of faith, to be examples of His integrity and courage,
His truthfulness, and simplicity, in proclaiming the soul-saving message of the Gospel.

"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.  Whoever rejects the Son will
not see life.  Instead, the wrath of God remains on them."
(John 3:36)

"Now brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you
received and in which you stand firm. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold
firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For
what I received I passed on to you of first importance: that Christ died for our
sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the
third day according to the Scriptures."
(1 Corinthians 15:1-4)
