Loyalty And Courage In Troubling Times

"But Jesus replied, You do not realize what you are asking.
Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink,
and to be baptized with the baptism with which
I am baptized? They answered, We are able."
Matthew 20:22

The Son of God goes forth to war,
A kingly crown to gain;
His blood red banner streams a-far:
Who follows in His train?
The Son of God goes forth to war.
Who follows in His train?
Who best can drink this cup of woe,
Triumphant over pain,
Who patient bears their cross below,
They follow in His train.

The martyr first, whose eagle eye
Could pierce beyond the grave,
Who saw His Master in the sky,
And called on Him to save:
The Son of God goes forth to war.
Who follows in His train?
Like Him, with pardon on His tongue
In the midst of mortal pain,
He prayed for them that did the wrong:
Who follows in His train?

A glorious band, the chosen few
On whom the Spirit came,
Twelve valiant saints, their hope they knew,
And mocked the cross and flame:
The Son of God goes forth in war.
Who follows in His train?
They met the tyrant's brandished steel,
The lion's glory mane
They bowed their necks the death to feel:
Who follows in their train?

A noble army of men and boys,
The matron and the maid,
Around the Savior's throne rejoice
In robes of light arrayed:
The Son of God goes forth to war
Who follows in their train?
They climbed the steep ascent of heaven
The peril, toil, and pain:
O God, to us may grace be given
To follow in their train!
Amen.
