Considered the first Pro-Life song, and recorded in the wake of the
US Supreme Court's 1973 decision to legalize abortion in America,
this post is dedicated in memory of Jim Seals, half of the 1970's
American pop/folk duo Seals & Croft,
who died Monday at the age of 80.
May he rest in peace.
(1975)
"Oh, little baby, you'll never cry, nor will you hear a sweet lullaby.
Oh, unborn child, if you only knew just what your momma was plannin' to do.
You're still a-clingin' to the tree of life, but soon you'll be cut off before your ripe.
Oh unborn child, beginning to grow inside your momma, but you'll never know.
Oh, tiny bud, that grows in the womb, only to be crushed before you can bloom.
Mama stop! Turn around, go back, think it over.
Now stop, turn around, go back, think it over.
Oh no momma, just let it be. You'll never regret it, just wait and see."
Unborn Child(1974)Seals & Croft
The lyrics of this song are from a poem written by Lana Day Bogan,
wife of the duo's recording engineer. She was inspired to write this poem,
which gives voice to the unborn baby's point-of-view, after she watched
a documentary about abortion.
After recording the album entitled, "Unborn Child" the pop duo was
warned by Warner Bros. not to release the album because the subject
of abortion was considered highly controversial at the time. However,
neither Jim Seals or Darrell Croft cared about making money,
or losing it through poor public reception of the album.
They recorded this song in to order to save lives.
Two of the most popular singers of the 1970's believed that their song's
message-the sanctity of human life- should be seriously considered as
the heart of the matter, when it comes to "a woman's right to choose",
not just for the unborn child, but for the mother herself.
