Full Buck Moon Tonight

Romance  feels right...especially with a Super Moon in the sky tonight!

As July's full moon sails across the sultry evening skies tonight she will appear
larger and brighter than her usual self.  This will happen on Thursday night as well.
In fact, luminous White Shell Woman will be the biggest Super Moon of 2022.

The phenomenon known as a "Super Moon" generally occurs when
a full moon is at the closest point to the Earth during its orbit,
making it appear larger than usual.

White Shell Woman is the moniker for the moon in the creation stories
of certain American Indian tribes of the southwestern United States.

I first heard this enchanting name for the moon in a superb mystery
novel written by author James D. Doss,  a supernatural tale of suspense
 appropriately titled,
"White Shell Woman" and featuring the exploits
of an enigmatic seven foot tall Ute Indian sleuth named Charlie Moon.

Sadly, the talented Mr. Doss is gone now, but, I have read all seventeen
of his intriguing mystery novels, most of which are set in the ancient
homeland of the Southern Ute Indians in southwestern Colorado.
The tribe's beautiful name for the moon has sort of stuck with me.

In the tradition of my Cherokee ancestors, July's moon is called, "gu ye quo ni"
the Month of the Ripe Corn Moon.  This was the time of the year when corn ears
were ready for roasting and the "Green Corn Dance" or festival was held.
It was also the time for the "AniStusti" or "Little War"-  the playing of
stick ball games- which is more commonly known today as Lacrosse.

July's moon is called the "Full Buck Moon" due to the full rack
of antlers found on male deer at this time of the year.

It is also known as the "Thunder Moon" because of the
frequency of  thunderstorms during this Midsummer month.

I hope the skies are clear where you're at tonight!

🌝South Jersey Summer Memories 🌝

I remember spending many summer nights out on the swing set in our
backyard, my bare feet soaring higher and higher into the damp air as
I pushed myself on a swing, breathing in the sweet mingled fragrance
of wild honeysuckle and newly mown grass, watching lightning bugs
twinkle across the yard,  while crickets chirped all around me, and
the locusts, hidden away in the darkened tree tops, screeched their
eerie night song beneath the moon and the stars.

When the locust chatter at night or buzz in the daytime
the weather will always be very hot and humid.

But what else is southern New Jersey in the month of July?

The scents and sounds of those long ago summer nights blended in
with music from a transistor radio tuned to "The Boss" radio station,
WFIL-AM, bringing the latest and greatest pop hits of the mid-70's
over staticky airwaves from distant Philadelphia.  Those were the days!

I was sometimes allowed to stay up late on summer nights to watch
old movies, often into the wee hours of the morning! This was when I
first discovered and  fell in love with a zany romance story complete with
an Oscar Award-winning musical theme song- centered around the moon!
  (Well, sort of, anyway!)

This classic movie became one of my all time favorites!

Moon River
