"O black water... keep on rollin'...Mississippi moon won't you keep on shinin' on me..."
became one of the instant, catchy "hook lyrics" of this classic, mid-1970's pop song
by the California-based, American rock band The Doobie Brothers.
Released in November, 1974 and distinguished by its melodious a cappella section,
"Black Water" composed by Doobie Brothers founding member Patrick Simmons
was inspired by the southern adventure stories of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn
and Tom Sawyer, which he read as a kid, and, from his first visit to New Orleans,
which he recalled as, "going down to the French Quarter as often as possible
and going into the clubs and listening to Dixieland."
Described by the staff of Billboard as " a melody that meandered like a lazy, rolling river"
"Black Water" was one of the greatest hits of all time for The Doobie Brothers and the
Number One most popular song in America this second week of March in 1975.
I remember The Doobie Brothers singing this song when they made
a guest star appearance on the ABC sitcom, "What's Happening!" in 1978.
