Flashback Friday: Bridge Over Troubled Water

Released in January, 1970 this beautiful song by American folk rock duo
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel was inspired by the lines from an 19th century
African slave spiritual, as well as a Christian Passion hymn composed
by Johann Sabastian Bach, "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded". Based
on a Latin poem written in the Middle Ages, the stanzas address
the various parts of Christ's body hanging on the cross.

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" won five awards at the 13th Annual
Grammy awards in 1971, including Grammy Award for Record of the Year
and Song of the Year.  Although many other recording artists have covered
it over the years, this song remains Simon & Garfunkel's most
successful single of all time.

It was the Number One hit song this first week of March in 1970.
