100 Years Ago This Month: The Tri-State Tornado

In this season of often unprecedented violent weather systems, as we recently
witnessed in the Mid-West and the Deep South, it is important to remember
that history, including bad weather history, has a tendency to repeat itself.

This month is the 100th anniversary of the Tri-State Tornado, the deadliest
long track tornado in United States history.   In the course of hours, the storm
passed through eastern Missouri, southern Illinois, and southern Indiana,
killing nearly 700 people and injuring thousands more.

The tornado also killed at least thirty farm owners in southern Illinois and southwestern
Indiana, which has baffled researchers of this tragic event.  As the livelihood of the farmer
mostly depends on the weather, and most farmers to this day are dedicated cloud-watchers,
some historians believe that it was concealed by a massive cloud, giving it the
appearance of a dust storm instead of a deadly twister.
