Flashback Friday: The Living Years

I was reminded of this song the other day when my son said to me that
the current problems in our nation today are the result of the negative
influences from my generation.  I suppose there is some truth in
the words, "every generation blames the one before".

Released in December, 1988 the ballad, "The Living Years" by the rock band,
Mike + The Mechanics, reminds the listener, "it's too late when we die to
admit we don't see eye to eye" and resonates with many people living
in the present, who are struggling with painful issues from the past,
especially in relationships with their parents and family.

"The Living Years" which addresses a son's regret over unresolved conflict with
his now deceased father, was a worldwide hit, topping the US Billboard Hot 100
in March, 1989, the band's only number one and last top ten hit on that chart.

It won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 1989, and was
nominated for four Grammy awards in 1990, including Record and Song of the Year,
as well as Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Video.
