The Time Of The Strawberry Moon

The full Strawberry Moon rises tonight.  Although this moon is
often depicted as pink in color, is it really a pink-colored moon?

According to the folks at the Old Farmer's Almanac, the full moon
will rise tonight just after sunset in the southeastern sky.  Luna will
be large and beautiful -and golden in color- as she climbs
 higher into the night sky.

Peak illumination will occur around 11:45 p.m. Eastern Time.

June's full moon is the last moon of the springtime or can be the first
moon of the summer and is called the Strawberry Moon after the juicy,
sweet red berries harvested at this time.  This has nothing to do
with the moon's appearance, although sometimes the moon can
appear to have a reddish hue when its close to the horizon
because the light rays must pass through the densest
layers of the atmosphere.

In the tradition of my Cherokee ancestors, June's full moon is
called the Green Corn Moon, a time for tending the young crop in the field.

Names for the moon in Europe at this time include the Honey Moon and
the Mead Moon as June is a traditional month for marriages.  In past times,
the fermented drink called Mead was often served at wedding receptions.

It was common for the bride and groom to drink Mead, which is made from
honey, for a moon cycle (30 days) after their wedding.  Drinking mead was
believed to increase the fertility of the couple.  Meanwhile, the honeymoon
is a tradition still carried on today and is a romantic vacation
taken by the newlywed couple.

I hope the skies are clear where you're at tonight, fellow moon watchers!
