Released in October, 1977 this country song, written by singer-songwriter,
David Allen Coe and recorded by country singer Johnny Paycheck seemed
to express the frustrated mood of most hard-working Americans at the time.
Our nation was dealing with the effects of "economic stagnation"- high inflation,
the energy crisis, (remember "odd" "even" gas rationing?)- with many people
putting in long hours at day to day jobs with no apparent reward, seeing their
paychecks dwindle, and often threatened with a lay-off or worse, having to
stand in a long line outside their county unemployment office.
This was one of the major reasons Ronald Reagan became our 40th President
in a landslide election only a few years later!
"Take This Job And Shove It" was Johnny Paycheck's only Number #1 hit song
and spent two weeks at the top of Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart that year.
