With all her celestial beauty in sight... Luna will be stunning tonight!
This month's Full Sturgeon Moon will also be the last Super Moon for 2022.
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the moon will rise in the southeastern
skies just after sunset and will reach full illumination around 9:36 pm (EST).
Unfortunately, the moon will coincide with the apex of the annual
Perseids Meteor Shower tonight. Although the brilliant moonlight might
hinder or limit the viewing of meteors shooting across the night skies, you
might still be able to see them if you choose a dark place outdoors-with
no ground light interference- and a good view of the northern sky.
As I wrote in a post earlier this week, the Perseids Meteor Shower
is famously known for casting large and brilliant fireballs.
A great deal of patience, along with a comfortable lawn chair,
and a can of bug repellent made from natural essential oils is
also necessary for any lengthy viewing of a meteor shower.
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, August's full moon is named
for the giant sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain,
a natural fresh water lake shared by both the United States and Canada,
where these fish were once plentiful in the late months of summer.
an island in Lake Champlain, which is located in northwestern Vermont.
The fish is believed to have died from natural causes.
Lake Champlain is said to be one of the few remaining habitats of these large
bewhiskered fish, whose existence on earth predates the time of the dinosaurs.
is called "Galoni" or the "Fruit Moon" a time when wild fruits on
trees and bushes were gathered for sun drying and winter storage.
Herbs and other wild plants were also gathered for food and
for medicine. Green Corn Festivals are still common
in Cherokee communities at this time of the year.
