I know my faith is founded

On Jesus Christ, my God and Lord;

And this my faith confessing,

Unmoved I stand upon His Word.

Man's reason cannot fathom

The truth of God profound;

Who trusts her subtle wisdom

Relies on shifting ground.

God's Word is all sufficient,

It makes divinely sure,

And trusting in its wisdom,

My faith shall rest secure.

Increase my faith, dear Savior,

For Satan seeks by night and day

To rob me of this treasure

And take my hope of bliss away.

But Lord, with Thee beside me,

Flashback Friday: Double Shot Denver

 

While writing "Flashback Friday" I am often searching for just the right song, 
or what could be considered the featured artist or group's "signature song".

  American singer/songwriter and 1970's music icon John Denver has 
several songs which could be considered his "signature songs", including
 "Sunshine On My Shoulders" "Back Home Again" and "Country Roads".   

One of my favorite Denver classics is the beautiful ballad, "Annie's Song".

Released as a single from his eighth studio album, "Annie's Song"
was written for Denver's wife at the time, Annie Martell Denver.

According to him, it was penned in about ten and a half minutes one day while
  he was riding on a ski lift to the top of Aspen Mountain in Aspen, Colorado.
John seemed to capture the feeling he felt while surrounded by the beauty
of the snow-capped mountains, "filling up his senses" all around him.
This, and the love he felt for his wife inspired him.

 "Initially it was a love song," recalled Annie Denver.  And it was given to
  me through him, and yet,  for him, it became a bit like a prayer."

"You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply..."

"Rocky Mountain High" which is one of the two state songs of Colorado, came 
 under scrutiny after being released, when the FCC deemed, erroneously so, that
the phrase "...friends around the campfire and everybody's high"... promoted
the usage of drugs.  As a result, certain radio stations refused to play the song.
 John Denver publicly defended the song, claiming, "everybody's high"
was an innocent reference to the sense of peace that he
 found within the Rocky Mountains.

In 1985, Denver testified before Congress in the Parents Music Resource
Center hearing about his experience: "This was obviously done by people
who have never seen or been to the Rocky Mountains and also have never
experienced the elation, celebration of life or the joy of living that one
feels when he observes something as wondrous as the Perseids meteor
shower on a moonless, cloudless night, when there are so many stars
that you have a shadow from the starlight and you are out camping
with your friends, your best friends, and introducing them to one
of nature's most spectacular light shows for the first time."

Cash Box agreed, claiming that the song, "sparkles with sincerity
and beautiful lyrical images."

I think most people listening to this lovely song will agree!

Thanking Them Every Day

 

In regards to the return of Memorial Day once again, I believe our soldiers
 and veterans, past and present, should not be linked in with what has 
 become known in recent years as the "official kick off of summer".

While I am not opposed to people holding backyard barbecues or taking a trip 
 to the beach, I do not think this day of solemnity to honor the memory of our
 fallen military heroes should be used to sell cars. Save it for the 4th of July.

Our soldier and veterans, past and present, should be honored and thanked,
not just on one single day in late May, but every day of the year. 

 When I have looked up at Old Glory waving in the wind against the sky,
 presiding over the rows of soldiers' graves in the military cemetery
 near me, where my father, Anthony Brida, a veteran of the United States
 Marine Corps., is interred, or, in Hawaii, or at Arlington... words often
 fail me when I consider the enormity of the sacrifices made
 by those resting beneath the soil.

I have also visited Punchbowl Crater National Cemetery in Honolulu.  But what
I remember most about my trip to Hawaii in 1987 was visiting the Arizona Memorial
at Pearl Harbor.  Standing there looking down at the sunken battleship below the
surface of the water, I experienced both a sad and eerie feeling thinking about
the young men entombed beneath my feet who had lost their lives in the Japanese
  attack at Pearl Harbor on that dreadful morning, Sunday, December 7, 1941.
All of them were true American heroes.

A few years ago, I read the book, "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, recounting the
story of WWII veteran Louis Zamperini. I could hardly get through some of the
chapters of this book without crying as I read the accounts of the absolute horrors
suffered by many of our servicemen serving in the Pacific theater of the war.

While some, like Mr. Zamperini, survived, and came home again, I often
think of the American men who never came back and are lying buried
beneath foreign soil.  And not only on remote islands in the South Pacific,
but on the battlefields of Europe...in the mountains of Korea... the jungles
of Vietnam, the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan...

When I see the sorry state of Washington DC politics today I have to ask myself,
"Were the sacrifices of these brave souls for this?  Unfortunately, the answer is a
resounding, "Yes!"  The men who gave their lives in service to this nation died
for the freedom of smarmy, career politicians as well as my own.

I met an elderly man one day while shopping in the grocery store. He was wearing a cap
with the insignia of a battleship.  I asked him if he was a veteran.  He answered, yes, 
and that he had served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.  When I shook his
hand and thanked him for my freedom, he seemed startled at first, and then began
to cry.  He told me he did not think many people, especially the ones in
Washington DC, cared about his service to our nation.

I told him that it was not true and that many American people appreciated him.

To all the soldiers and veterans reading this post, may you have a beautiful
and blessed Memorial Day.  Thank you for your service to our nation and
especially, for protecting and defending my freedom.

To those who are no longer here on this earth, may they rest in eternal peace.

Flashback Friday: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

 

"Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train
Till Stoneman's calvary came and tore up the tracks again.
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive,
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember oh so well..."

Written in 1969 by Robbie Robertson for the Canadian-American rock group,
 The Band,  "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a first-person account of the 
severe depredation suffered by southerners in the last days of the Civil War, especially
after Union General George Stoneman and his raiders launched a notorious military
 campaign against the civilian population of eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina,
 and southwestern Virginia, which included the destruction of all railroad lines and bridges.

In this clip from the 1978 movie, "The Last Waltz" American singer/songwriter and drummer
for The Band, Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm, (1940-2012) whose birthday is May 26th, leads  
 the members of the group through a passionate rendition of this Civil War-inspired song.

In his 1993 autobiography, "This Wheel's On Fire"  Helm, wrote, "Robbie and I worked on
 "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" up in Woodstock.  I remember taking him to the
 library so he could research the history and geography of the era and make 
General Robert E. Lee come out with all due respect."

A young man and woman in love.  They were about to be engaged.   

Then, in an unguarded moment, an appalling act of unmitigated evil

 destroyed the hopes and dreams of this young couple forever.

Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, two Israeli Embassy staff members
were shot and killed shortly after leaving an event being held at the Capital
Jewish Museum in Washington DC on Wednesday night.

The suspect, later identified as 30 year old Elias Rodriguez, chanted,
"Free Palestine, Free Palestine" after being taken into policy custody.

In an emotional statement to the news media, Israeli Ambassador to the
United States Yechiel Leiter stated that Yaron had only recently, "purchased a
ring this week with the intention of proposing to his girlfriend next week in Jerusalem."

Meanwhile, an angry President Donald Trump took to social media to express his
outrage over the attack, posting on Truth Social: "These horrible D.C. killings,
 based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW!  Hatred and Radicalism
 have no place in the U.S.A."

A young man and woman in the prime of their lives were targeted and murdered
 for being Jewish.  We are watching history repeating itself before our very eyes. 

My thoughts and prayers are with the parents and families of Yaron and Sarah.

  May God comfort them in this terrible time of sorrow and loss.

Monday's Meditation: The Holy Spirit

 

"The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him-the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord."
(Isaiah 11:2)

The blackout took my neighborhood by surprise. Suddenly in total darkness,
I inched my way to the bedside table and fumbled for the flashlight. What a
frustration...it didn't work. How useless-a flashlight that didn't function.

Just as useless is the person unable to function according to God's divine plan.

Why? Because God originally designed the human spirit to contain the Holy Spirit.
In the garden, Adam and Eve had perfect oneness with God. The Holy Spirit lived in
their human spirits and enlightened every aspect of their lives. Once they pronounced their
 "declaration of independence" from God, however, sin came in and the Spirit went out.

The pair were like a flashlight without batteries; with no power on the inside,  
there was no light on the outside. They spiraled downward into spiritual darkness.

Yet God did not give up on all those who were born into that same darkness.
 "The lamp of the Lord searches the spirit of man." (Proverbs 20:27). God desired  
to reunite the Holy Spirit with the human spirit so that they could again be one.

When you feel the frustration of wandering in the dark, know that the Lord 
has already provided the perfect guide for your life.

"For when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth."
(John 6:13).

Your own personal Counselor, Conscience, Convictor, and Comforter fills
 your soul-your mind, will, and emotions--with perfect truth. 

 He teaches your mind, directs your will, and guides your emotions.
As a result, those who are joined to the Spirit better understand spiritual things.

"My message and preaching were not with wise and persuasive words but
with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not
 rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power."
(2 Corinthians 2:4)

Like the flashlight, you were designed to shine; but you can never shine with
your own power. The Holy Spirit provides the power to produce the light.
And once you shine as you were intended to shine, you will never be useless!
