Throwback Thursday: A Lady Called Camille

As the summer winds down, the Atlantic Hurricane Season is in full swing.
In New Jersey, it seems we are most likely to experience a hurricane in late
August or early September, but, we have experienced later storms too,
like Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012,
both of which came to pay us a visit in October.

This film documents the catastrophic damage left in the wake of Hurricane Camille,
which devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast and surrounding areas in August, 1969.
Considered one of the most intense Category 5 storms  to make landfall in U.S. history,
Camille came ashore packing winds of  200 miles an hour, and produced a storm surge
estimated to be at least 30 to 40 feet high.  Later, the remnants of the storm brought
heavy rains and flooding to Virginia, resulting in significant damage and loss of life.

However, thousands of lives were saved due to the quick implementation of disaster
plans, trained rescue teams, help from other states, and the federal government.
