I know this is a little late, but I could not let summer end without paying the season
tribute with the beautiful dance theme from the 1955 romantic comedy drama, "Picnic".
Centering around 24 hours of life in a small Kansas town as the community prepares
for their annual Labor Day picnic, the movie was nominated for six
Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
During the filming of this movie, and especially during the picnic
scenes, the sky appears darker than usual. This was due to an F-5
tornado sweeping through the filming area near Halstead, Kansas, which
forced the cast and crew to take cover. The storm was later recognized as
the worst twister to ever hit the state. Although the storm spared the set,
it destroyed the neighboring city of Udall. Crew from the film later drove
their trucks and equipment there to help clean up the damage from the storm.
The rest of the film was later shot on a back lot in Burbank, California.
The entrancing "Moonglow & The Theme From Picnic" by Morris Stoloff
and the Columbia Pictures Orchestra reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100
and remained on the chart for 27 weeks in 1956.
