The great actor and comedic genius Charlie Chaplin was also an accomplished,
self-taught musician, who composed the instrumental theme, "Smile" for his
1936 movie, "Modern Times". The words to this song were later added
by lyricists John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons.
"Smile" became an instant and memorable hit for the legendary
Nat King Cole after he recorded the song in 1954.
This song has always reminded me of the importance of putting on a smile,
even when there is not much to smile about these days. Like the funny character
and silent film legend, the "Little Tramp" immortalized by Chaplin, "Smile" brings
a message of hope and resilience to the listener and what the armor of a smile,
and even laughter can do in the face of adversity, heartache, and sadness.
