"Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walkin' home from our house Christmas Eve,
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa we believe..."
Although this holiday novelty song was first performed in 1979 by
American country singer Elmo Earl "Dr. Elmo" Shropshire and his first
wife, Patsy, the first time I heard the tale of eggnog tipsy Grandma's
collision in the snow with Santa's sleigh was at Christmastime in
1984, when this offbeat record became a surprise hit in America,
played on radio stations from coast-to-coast.
The song was later made into an animated television special in 2000,
although toned down for younger viewers, with Santa Claus
taking Grandma back to the North Pole with him
after she develops amnesia from the accident.
