Monday Meditation: Beyond The Stars And Planets I Can See

Creator of the stars of night,

Thy people’s everlasting light,

Jesu, Redeemer, save us all,

And hear Thy servants when they call.

Early this morning, just after midnight, I went outside into the frosty cold
air to look up at the full moon sailing overhead in the sky like a huge spotlight.
The silvery brilliance of the late October evening, the bright, visible planets
and the stars circling around the moon filled me with silent wonder.

"The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament
shows the work of His hands."
(Psalm 19:1)

Often when I look up and study the night sky I feel a strong link with the past.
Many people before me, some who were famous, and others not so famous,
strangers I wish I had known, and loved ones I really miss sometimes, all
of them perhaps studied the constellations at one time, or marveled at
the pale celestial glory of the moon.

May be they wished on a star, or used a telescope set up in their back
yard to watch the stars, like I used to some years ago. It's a hobby I should
take up again!  A clear night sky has always filled me with a sense of
astonishment and of hope.  The beauty of creation linked with eternity.

As He traveled the dusty roads of the Holy Land, I am sure the Lord
Jesus probably looked up at the glittering star patterns on clear nights and
thought about home. When I gaze up at the stars above, I know I am looking
at only part of heaven. Beyond the stars and planets I can see, there is another
place waiting for me someday when my time on earth is over.

Jesus promised, "In My Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so,
would have I told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome
you into My presence, so that where I am you also will be."
(John 14:2-3)
