What Child is this
Who lay to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping.

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him praise
The Babe, the Son of Mary
So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh
Come peasant king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him praise
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

"What Child Is This?" was written in 1865 by an Englishman named
William Chatterton Dix, who set his carol to the tune of the traditional
English folk song, "Greensleeves". The hauntingly beautiful melody
encompasses the surprise and wonder which the shepherds, while
abiding their flocks in the fields by night, must have experienced
after an angel appeared before them, heralding "good news
of great joy which shall be for all people" and later that night,
as they hurried to see their long promised Messiah-King
lying in His manger bed in Bethlehem.
