This exciting film, adapted from American author Conrad Richter's 1953 novel
of the same name, "The Light In The Forest" is a western historical fiction drama
which is based on real people and events from mid-18th century America.
In 1764 Pennsylvania, a young man named John Cameron Butler, is returned
to his family after being abducted as a child by a tribe of Delaware Indians.
Re-named, "True Son" he did not want to leave his adoptive Indian family, however,
after the signing of a peace treaty, all white captives were released and forced to
return to the white settlements. As Johnny/ True Son struggles to adjust living
with his family again, as well as dealing with the reactions from the neighbors
in his community, one person in particular, Uncle Wilse Owens, makes it
especially hard for him and treats him as "a dirty Indian".
Johnny is later befriended by a servant girl working for the Owens family.
Shenandoe, who was orphaned when her family was killed by the Indians,
is initially afraid of Johnny. However, as she comes to see a more gentle
and caring side of him, they eventually fall in love.
"The Light In The Forest " stars Fess Parker as frontiersman Del Hardy, who
brings Johnny back to his family, Joanne Dru as his love interest, Milly Elder,
Frank Ferguson as Johnny's father, Harry Butler, Jessica Tandy as
Johnny's mother, Myra Butler, Wendell Corey as Uncle Wilse Owens,
James MacAuthur as Johnny/True Son, and Carol Lynley as Shenandoe.
