Full Sturgeon Moon Tonight

August's full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon due to the abundance of these
fish in streams and lakes in the northern hemisphere at this time of the year.

Sturgeon is actually a common name for some 27 species of fish
belonging to the family Acipenseridae.  They are found in lakes and
streams and on the coastlines of many countries around the world.

The earliest sturgeon date back to the Late Cretaceous period and
are said to descend from an earlier species of fish dating back
to the Triassic period some 245 to 208 million years ago.

This month's moon is also being called a rare Blue Moon,
not due to any unusual change in color, but because it
will be the fourth full moon of the summer season
when there are usually only three.

Hope the moon is visible where you are tonight!
