Flashback Friday: What Child Is This?

This beautiful Christmas song written by William Chatterton Dix in 1865 was
set to the tune of the traditional English medieval folk song, "Greensleeves".

Although the second stanza of this song:

"Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear, shall pierce Him through,
The cross shall be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail, the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the son of Mary."

which tells the reason why Jesus came, to die on the cross for the
sins of mankind, is usually skipped over in order to keep the song
upbeat with the joy of His birth as the Savior of the world, this
version of "What Child Is This?" sung by the angelic voice of
lovely country artist Martina McBride is one of the
best renditions I have ever heard.
