Flashback Friday: Blue Velvet

The most successful recording of the romantic ballad, "Blue Velvet" was recorded
this last week of May in 1963 by handsome American teen idol Bobby Vinton.

The song was released a few months later in August, 1963.  Backed by Burt Bacharach
and his orchestra, Vinton's version reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts on
September 21st of that year and remained at Number 1 for the subsequent two weeks.

President Trump Convicted But God Is Still In Control

"In You, O Lord, do I put my trust and seek refuge; let me never be put to shame
or have my hope in You disappointed; deliver me in Your righteousness."
(Psalm 31:1)

President Donald Trump

As I read about the conviction of former President Donald Trump this morning
I was reminded of the story of  Jacob's son, Joseph in the Bible.  After he was
sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and brought down to Egypt by
a caravan of Ishmaelite traders,  Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the
captain and chief executioner of the royal guard bought him from them.

Although he was now a slave, his master saw that the Lord was with Joseph
and that Joseph's God made all that he did flourish and succeed in his hand.
Potiphar was so pleased with his servant that he made him supervisor over
his house and all that he owned, and the Lord blessed the Egyptian's
house and property for Joseph's sake.

Unfortunately, Potiphar was married to a promiscuous woman, whom
"cast her eyes upon" the handsome young Joseph and was determine to seduce him.
After Joseph rebuffed her unwanted advances, Potiphar's angry wife accused him
of rape and Joseph's master took him and put him into prison.

But, even while incarcerated, the Lord blessed Joseph and showed him mercy
and loving-kindness and gave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison.
The warden in return committed the care of all the prisoners to Joseph.
He soon gained full control over the day to day operations within the prison,
"for the Lord was with him and made whatever he did to prosper."
( Genesis 39:23)

Hence, a wrongful conviction and incarceration was used by God
to bless His servant and to bless others, and brings to the readers
of His Word one of the earliest accounts of prison reform.

Although I am sad and angry at the glaring injustice of Donald Trump's
conviction by his enemies on the political Left, my most fervent prayer
for him and his family comes from the words of the prophet Isaiah:

"But no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue
that shall rise against you in judgment you shall show to be in the wrong.
This peace, righteousness, security, triumph over the opposition, is the
heritage of the servants of the Lord, those in whom the ideal
Servant of the Lord is reproduced; this is the righteousness or
the vindication which they obtain from Me, this is that which
I impart to them as their justification, says the Lord."
(Isaiah 54:17)

Thursday's Thoughts: The Sword Of The Lord And Of Gideon

"That same night the Lord said to Gideon,  Arise, and go down against
their camp, for I have given it into your hand."

The Lord said to Gideon, "Go forward!"
For surely I'll open the way;
Though countless the host that opposes,
Thou hast but to trust and obey."

(Refrain)
The sword of the Lord and of Gideon
Is just as effective today, hallelujah!
As it was when the great host of Midian
Was vanquished, and fled in dismay.

His sword never yet lost a battle;
His promises never can fail;
O Gideons, move steadily forward
No matter what foes may assail.

The sword of the Lord and of Gideon
Is just as effective today, hallelujah!
As it was when the great host of Midian
Was vanquished, and fled in dismay.

Be ready to throw down your pitcher;
Your lamp hold aloft in your hand;
And blow such a blast on your trumpet
'Twill echo all over the land.

The sword of the Lord and of Gideon
Is just as effective today, hallelujah!
As it was when the great host of Midian
Was vanquished, and fled in dismay.

Sound none but true notes on your trumpet
As over the road you shall roam;
Till Gabriel's trump blows the signal
That calls the last Gideon home.

The sword of the Lord and of Gideon
Is just as effective today, hallelujah!
As it was when the great host of Midian
Was vanquished, and fled in dismay.

"People react differently to crisis in their lives.  In the case of the people of Israel,
it was the invasion of the Midianites.  They were afraid, oppressed, disheartened,
and "greatly impoverished because of Midian". (Judges 6:6)

In the case of Gideon, it was his call to go against all odds and fight against an
army which "arrived on droves of camels too numerous to count." (Judges 6:5)

The story of Gideon teaches us that one must stand tall in the face of problems,
that there is hope for the timid of soul. God can make the weak strong, and God
can help people obtain victory when confronted by impossible odds."

Memorial Day Tribute: 50,000 Names

A moving tribute to our American heroes of the Vietnam War
by country music legend George Jones.

I remember visiting the Vietnam Wall in the summer of 1987. Next to
the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor which I visited the same year,
this black granite wall is one of the saddest places I have ever been.

To those whose names are carved on this wall, you are gone
from this earth, but your service to this nation is not forgotten.
Thank you for your courage and for my freedom.

May you rest in eternal peace.

Monday Meditation: Soldier's Memorial Day

One of the first observances of what became known as Decoration Day happened
on May 25, 1866 when a group of widows, mothers, aunts, sisters, and others
visited a cemetery in Columbus, Mississippi to decorate the graves of the
Confederate soldiers who were killed in the Battle of Shiloh.  There were also
buried there, men who had fought for the Union, but whose graves were
neglected because they had been the enemy.  The women were so disturbed
at the sight of the bare graves that they decided to decorate them too.

Decoration Day was later changed to Memorial Day to honor all
Americans who have fallen while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Although it has since become known as "the official start of summer" I believe
Memorial Day should be observed as time of solemn reflection and gratitude
for those who gave their lives defending this nation and to protect our freedom.

When flow'ry Summer is at hand,
And Spring has gemm'd the earth with bloom,
We hither bring, with loving hand,
Bright flow'rs to deck our soldier's tomb.

(Chorus)
Gentle birds above are sweetly singing
O'er the graves of heroes brave and true;
While the sweetest flow'rs we are bringing,
Wreath'd in garlands of red, white, and blue.

They died our country to redeem,
And from the loving earth we bring
The wealth of hill, and vale, and stream,
Our grateful land's best offering.

Gentle birds above are sweetly singing
O'er the graves of heroes brave and true;
While the sweetest flow'rs we are bringing,
Wreath'd in garlands of red, white, and blue.

With snowy hawthorn, clusters white,
Fair violets of heav'nly blue,
And early roses, fresh and bright,
We wreathe the red, and white, and blue.

Gentle birds above are sweetly singing
O'er the graves of heroes brave and true;
While the sweetest flow'rs we are bringing,
Wreath'd in garlands of red, white, and blue.

But purer than the fairest flowers,
We strew above the honored dead,
The tender changeless love of ours,
That decks the soldier's lowly bed.

Gentle birds above are sweetly singing
O'er the graves of heroes brave and true;
While the sweetest flow'rs we are bringing,
Wreath'd in garlands of red, white, and blue.

We bend and kiss the precious sod,
Swift fall our tears the graves above
Oh! Brothers! from the hills of God,
Look down and see our changeless love.

Gentle birds above are sweetly singing
O'er the graves of heroes brave and true;
While the sweetest flow'rs we are bringing,
Wreath'd in garlands of red, white, and blue.

An Appeal To Heaven

"Where there lies no appeal on earth...
they have just cause to make their appeal to heaven."
   -John Locke

The Pine Tree Flag

According to The New York Times, appealing to heaven is "a sign
of provocation".   In a recent report, the arrogant lap dogs of the
political Left were in a tizzy over Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's
alleged flying of an "Appeal To Heaven" Pine Tree Flag last year
at his vacation home in New Jersey.

In a recent article in The Daily Signal, this story comes on the heels
of another media-concocted "scandal" revealing that Alito flew an
upside down American flag outside of his house for a few days in early 2021.

Flying an American flag upside down is a traditional sign of
a nation in distress- which we became- the moment Joe Biden
was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States in 2021.

Alito claimed he was flying the upside down flag as the result
of a dispute between his wife and their neighbors over yard signs.

This man is not only an honorable Supreme Court justice, but, an American
citizen with a right to freedom of speech and expression. He has the
right under the United States Constitution to fly an American flag
upside down or to display a Pine Tree Flag or lawn signs at his
home regardless of what The Times or anyone else thinks!

According to Wikipedia, the Pine Tree Flag, also known as "An Appeal To Heaven"
Flag, was one of the flags used during the American Revolution. This flag, which
features a pine tree with the motto, "An Appeal To Heaven" or less frequently,
"An Appeal To God" was originally used by a squadron of six frigates
commissioned under General George Washington's authority as
commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in October, 1775.

The Times, however, insists that Alito hung the Pine Tree Flag, because,
like the inverted American flag, it "was carried by rioters at the Capitol
on January 6, 2021...and is now a symbol of support for former President
Donald J. Trump, for a religious stand of the "Stop The Steal" campaign
and for a push to remake American government in Christian terms."

Excuse me, New York Times, shouldn't the word be "restore" instead of "remake"?

The ludicrous media speculation concerning Alito's use of the Pine Tree Flag is as
annoying as the man who recently filmed himself on a public beach to berate a group
of sunbathers flying the American flag, claiming that they were MAGA supporters
and that our flag has been turned into a symbol of "white nationalism" because
of Donald Trump.  This mentality is the result of yet another media-generated
lie that has become the truth in the minds of many people
because they personally dislike the man.

However, as we recently witnessed at the Trump rally in The Bronx, his supporters
come in all races and skin colors.  Americans everywhere are very concerned about
the ruination of our country by the Far Left lunatics of the Democratic Party in
Washington DC.  Donald Trump wants to unite all Americans-even those who do
not like him for whatever reasons- and make our nation prosperous and secure again.

But in order for this to happen, an "Appeal To Heaven" is definitely the answer
in these dark and uncertain times.  As I have said many times before,
only God in His love and mercy can truly save America now.

A protest raged on a courthouse lawn,

Round a makeshift stage they charged on,

Fifteen hundred or more they say,

Had come to burn a Flag that day.

A boy held up the folded Flag,

Cursed it, and called it a dirty rag,

An OLD MAN pushed through the angry crowd,

With a rusty shotgun shouldered proud.

His uniform jacket was old and tight,

He had polished each button, shiny and bright.

He crossed that stage with a soldier's grace,

Until he and the boy stood face to face.

"FREEDOM OF SPEECH", the OLD MAN said,

Is worth dying for, good men are dead,

So you can stand on this courthouse lawn,

And talk us down from dusk to dawn,

But before any Flag gets burned today,

This OLD MAN IS GOING TO HAVE HIS SAY!

My father died on a foreign shore,

In a war they said would end all war.

But Tommy and I wasn't even full grown,

Before we fought in a war of our own.

And Tommy died on Iwo Jima's beach,

In the shadow of a hill he couldn't quite reach

Where five good men raised this Flag so high,

That the WHOLE WORLD COULD SEE IT FLY.

I got this bum leg that I still drag,

Fighting for this same old Flag.

Now there's but one shot in this old gun,

So now it's time to decide which one,

Which one of you will follow our lead,

To stand and die for what you believe?

For as sure as there is a rising sun,

You'll burn before this Flag burns, son.

Now this riot never came to pass

The crowd got quiet and that can of gas,

Got set aside as they walked away

To talk about what they had heard that day.

And the boy who had called it a "dirty rag",

Handed the OLD SOLDIER the folded Flag.

So the battle of the Flag this day was won

By a tired OLD SOLDIER with a rusty gun,

Who for one last time, had to show to some,

THIS FLAG MAY FADE, YET

THESE COLORS DON'T RUN.

It is the Soldier, not the minister

Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter

Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet

Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer

Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer

Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician

Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,

Who serves beneath the flag,

Whose coffin is draped by the flag,

Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Full Flower Moon Tonight

May's Full Flower Moon marks the transition from late spring into summertime
in many parts of North America with hot sunny days and warm, sultry evenings
often enhanced by the intoxicating scents of beautiful, night-blooming flowers
like Four O' Clocks, Angel's Trumpet,  Night-Blooming Jasmine, and Moon Flowers.
Tonight's full moon will rise tonight around 8:52 pm (EST).

In the language and tradition of my Cherokee ancestors, this month's moon
is called "Aniguti" or the "Planting Moon".  It marked the time of the year
when families prepared the fields and planted seeds which had been carefully
stored from the last growing season.  A traditional Cherokee garden included
corn, beans, squash, tomatoes, potatoes, yams, and sunflowers.

Preparations were also made for the annual Corn Dance
held at this time of the year.

I hope the moon will be visible from where you are at tonight!
