"Our rejoicing is sobered and subdued by a supreme consciousness of
the terrible price we have paid to rid the world of Hitler and his evil band.
Let us not forget, my fellow Americans, the sorrow and heartache, which
today abides in the homes of so many of our neighbors-neighbors whose most
priceless possession has been rendered as a sacrifice to redeem our liberty."
-President Harry Truman
V-E Day Radio Address to the American people
Thank God:
Out of hearts full of rejoicing,
there pours today this fervent prayer
Thank God the war in Europe is ended,
our arms have triumphed,
the Nazi abomination has been crushed.
Here is the glorious news we have been longing for.
Let us receive it exultantly, but prayerfully.
Brave men have died to give us this day;
many others may yet die before our other war is won.
Let us not forget them, or their deeds,
or the things they fought and died for.
Let us not forget the heavy tasks still ahead
in carrying the war against Japan
to a victorious conclusion.
And let us not fail, in our relief and joy
over the collapse of Hitlerism,
to offer to Divine Providence
our humble thanksgivings.
Thanks be to God!
