Hurricane Season 2024 is now upon us, and after what happened here
in southern New Jersey only a few years ago, when an F-3 tornado
ripped through our county, part of the remnants of Hurricane Ida,
I am not eager to see another major tropical storm make landfall in the U.S.
I thank God that no one in the path of that unprecedented twister
was seriously injured or killed on that day-September 1, 2021.
This year also marks the 70th anniversary of Hurricane Hazel,
a late season storm which made landfall near Calabash, North Carolina
as a Category 4 Hurricane on October 15, 1954.
Said to be the Tar Heel State's deadliest hurricane, after leaving a
trail of devastation in her wake, the storm headed north to wreak
havoc in the state of New Jersey. My mother was 12 years old
at the time and was growing up in the small community where
I live today. She well remembers Hurricane Hazel's fury and
living without electrical power for weeks on end afterwards.
She also told me that the day before the storm came
the weather was beautiful-bright blue skies and sunshine.
Definitely the calm before the storm!
