"A clean heart create for me, God; renew in me a steadfast spirit."

According to an old legend, the brilliant red feathers

of the beautiful cardinal were once

an unextraordinary dull brown color.

When he came upon the scene of the crucified Jesus

his tiny heart became heavy

 with deep sorrow and compassion.

He alighted upon a nearby tree branch

 and began to sing,

expressing the deeply felt sorrow

 in his heart.

A drop of the Savior's precious blood

fell upon the sad little bird.

  His dull brown feathers were

transformed to a beautiful scarlet red,

which perfectly matched the tiny

crown of glory

rising from his head.
