A New Year's Eve Prayer: Lumps Of Clay, Vessels Of Glory

"We are, after all, like lumps of clay.  There are brittle pieces, hard pieces,
We have little shape or beauty.  But we need not despair.  If we are clay,
let us remember there is a Potter and His wheel...We have only to be yielded,
that is, willing, surrendered, and He will do the rest.  He will make us according
to the pattern for which, in His love, He designed us.

And it will be good-for our own good-and for His glory."*

Have Thine own way, Lord!  Have Thine own way!

Thou art the Potter;  I am the clay.

Mold me and make me   After Thy will

While I am waiting,  Yielded and still.

Have Thine own way, Lord,  Have Thine own way!

Search me and try me, Master, today!

Whiter than snow, Lord,  Wash me just now,

As in Thy presence, Humbly I bow.

Have Thine own way, Lord!  Have Thine own way!

Wounded and weary, Help me, I pray!

Power, all power,  Surely is Thine!

Touch me and heal me,  Savior divine!

Have Thine own way, Lord!  Have Thine own way!

Hold o'er my being Absolute sway!

Fill with Thy Spirit,  Till all shall see Christ only,

always, Living in me!

Amen.

Hope In His Mercy And Loving-Kindness

Praise the Lord!

For it is good to sing praises to our God, for He is gracious

and lovely;  praise is becoming and appropriate.

Image courtesy/Pinterest

The Lord is building up Jerusalem;  He gathered together the exiles of Israel.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, curing their pains and sorrows.

He determines and counts the number of the stars; He calls them by their names.

Great is our Lord and of great power.  His understanding is inexhaustible and boundless.

The Lord lifts up the humble and downtrodden; He casts the wicked down to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praises with the harp or lyre to our God!

Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth,

Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.

He gives to the beast his food, and to the young ravens that for which they cry.

He delights not in the strength of the horse, nor does He take pleasure in the legs of a man.

The Lord takes pleasure in those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him,

in those who hope in His mercy and loving-kindness.

Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!   Praise your God, O Zion!

Prayers For Nigeria

Local authorities in the Plateau State of Nigeria have recently updated the death toll
from a jihadist massacre against Christian villages, which began on Christmas Eve,
to 195 people.   Meanwhile, a recovery mission for victims of the attacks continues
and will likely add to the catastrophic number of lives lost, according to Breitbart.com.

The perpetrators of the attacks are reported in the Nigerian media as "military bandits".
However, survivors of this and previous attacks know them to be members of the majority
Muslim Fulani, a jihadist group determine to exterminate the Christian population of
this sub-Saharan African nation.

Why is most of the world-especially the media- silent

about the Christian genocide in Nigeria?

Because Jews didn't do it.

Eternal Power, of earth and air!

Unseen, yet seen in all around,

Remote, but dwelling everywhere,

Though silent heard in every sound;

If e'er Thine ear in mercy bent,

When wretched mortals cried to Thee,

And if, indeed, Thy Son was sent,

To save lost sinners such as me:

Then hear me now, while kneeling here,

I lift to Thee my heart and eye,

And all my soul ascends in prayer,

OH, GIVE ME, GIVE ME FAITH! I cry.

Without some glimmering in my heart,

I could not raise this fervent prayer;

But, oh! a stronger light impart,

And in Thy mercy fix it there.

While Faith is with me, I am blest;

It turns my darkest night to day;

But while I clasp it to my breast.

I often feel it slide away.

Then, cold and dark, my spirit sinks,

To see my light of life depart;

And every fiend of Hell, methinks,

Enjoys the anguish of my heart.

What shall I do, if all my love,

My hopes, my toil, are cast away,

And if there be no God above,

To hear and bless me when I pray?

If this be vain delusion all,

If death be an eternal sleep,

And none can hear my secret call,

Or see the silent tears I weep!

Oh, help me, God!  For Thou alone

Canst my distracted soul relieve;

Forsake it not:  It is Thine own,

Thou weak, yet longing to believe.

Oh, drive these cruel doubts away;

And make me know, that Thou art God!

A faith, that shines by night and day,

Will lighten every earthly load.

If I believe that Jesus died,

And waking, rose to reign above;

Then surely, Sorrow, Sin, and Pride,

Must yield to Peace, and Hope, and Love.

And all the blessed words He said,

Will strength and holy joy impart:

A shield of safety o'er my head,

A spring of comfort in my heart.

Full Cold Moon Tonight

And yonder palace walls!"

The last full moon of the year will rise tonight, adding Luna's
pale beauty to the festive lights of the Christmas season.

However, I am not too sure if we will be able to see the moon
due to mostly overcast conditions here in my neck of the woods.

All glory, laud, and honor,

To Thee Redeemer King,

To Whom the lips of children

Make sweet hosannas ring.

Thou art King of Israel,

Thou art David's royal Son,

Who in the Lord's name comest

The King and Blessed One.

The company of angels

Are praising Thee on high,

And mortal men and all things

Created make reply.

The people of the Hebrews

With palms before Thee went;

Our praise and prayers and anthems

Before Thee we present.

To Thee before Thy passion

They sang their hymns of praise;

To Thee, now high exalted,

Our melody we raise.

Thou didst accept their praises;

Accept the prayers we bring,

Who in all good delightest,

Thou good and gracious King.

Amen

Christmas Through Art: The Holly And The Ivy

The Holly and the Ivy,

The playing of the merry organ,

Sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom

As white as any flower,

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ

To be our sweet Saviour.

The Holly bears a berry

As red as any blood;

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ

To do poor sinners good.

O the rising of the sun,

And the running of the deer,

The playing of the merry organ,

Sweet singing in the choir.

The Holly bear a prickle

As sharp as any thorn;

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ

For to redeem us all.

The Holly and the Ivy

Now both are full well grown;

Of all the trees are in the wood

The Holly bears the crown.

O the rising of the sun,

And the running of the deer,

The playing of the merry organ,

Sweet singing in the choir.

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear

For to us a Child s born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be
 upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called, Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.
(Isaiah 9:6)

It came upon the midnight clear

That glorious song of old

From angels bending near the earth

To touch their harps of gold.

Peace on the earth, good will to men,

From heaven's all-gracious King

The world in solemn stillness lay

To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come

With peaceful wings unfurled,

And still their heavenly music floats

O'er all the weary world.

Above its sad and lowly plains,

They bend on hovering wing,

And ever o'er its Babel sounds

The blessed angels sing.

And ye, beneath life's crushing load,

Whose forms are bending low,

Who toil along the climbing way

With painful steps and slow.

Look now! for glad and golden hours

Come swiftly on the wing,

O rest beside the weary road

And hear the angels sing!

For lo, the days are hast'ning on

By prophets seen of old

When with the ever-circling years

Shall come the time foretold.

When the new heav'n and earth shall own

The Prince of Peace, their King

And the whole world send back the song

Which now the angels sing.

Flashback Friday: The Little Drummer Boy

 "What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part;
Yet what can I give Him?
Give Him my heart."
-Christina Rossetti

One of the best memories of my childhood was watching the
story of "The Little Drummer Boy" on television at Christmastime.
Like Linus' re-telling of the Nativity story in "A Charlie Brown Christmas"
 the gift of the heartbroken Aaron playing his drum for the Baby Jesus
 in the manger always makes me tear up. I think it is sad that they
no longer air these classic Christmas cartoons on network television.

"The Little Drummer Boy" was the number one Christmas song
 in America this week in December, 1964.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her King!

Let every heart prepare Him room

And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and nature sing!

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!

Let men their songs employ,

While fields and flocks,

rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy!

No more let sins and sorrows grow

Nor thorns infest the ground

He comes to make His blessings flow

Far as the curse is found,

Far as the curse is found,

Far as the curse is found!

He rules the world with truth and grace

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness

And wonders of His love,

And wonders of His love,

And wonders of His love!

"Joy To The World"
(1719)
Isaac Watts
(1674-1748)
English congregational minister,
hymn writer, theologian, and logician.
Known as the "Father of English hymnody"

The Story Behind The Song

In the late 1600's most worship music sung in the churches in Europe
were Old Testament Psalms.  A young man with an extraordinary talent
for writing hymns by the name of Isaac Watts thought that the songs sung
 sounded stilted and unnatural, not to mention "atrocious" for worship services.

"To see the dull indifference, the negligent and thoughtless air that
sits upon the faces of the whole assembly, while the psalm is upon
their lips, might even tempt a charitable observer to suspect the
fervency of their inward religion," he observed.

When a church deacon, who also happened to be his father,
challenged him, saying, "Give us something better young man."
Isaac, who loved to read and to study the Bible, went home
and penned his very first hymn.

In his later life, Isaac Watts took inspiration from the words of the
98th psalm, a declaration of praise and singing to the Lord, Who,
"has made known His salvation; His righteousness has He openly
shown in the sight of the nations."
 (Psalm 98:2, Luke 2: 30, 31)

The end result was a song which reflects earth's rejoicing
  over the birth of the Messiah, Who came to rule with true
 justice, truth, and grace, and from Whom all blessings flow.

"Joy To The World" has since become one of the most
well-known and beloved Christmas carols of all time.

Thursday's Thoughts: Fear Not, O Zion!

"In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear not, O Zion.
Let not your hands sink down or be slow and listless.

The Lord your God is in the midst of you, a Mighty One, a Savior, Who saves!
He will rejoice over you with joy; He will rest in silent satisfaction and in His love
He will be silent and make no mention of past sins, or even recall them;
He will exult over you with singing.

I will gather those belonging to you, the Israelites in captivity, who yearn
and grieve for the solemn assembly and the festivals, on whom their exile
and inability to attend services at Jerusalem have brought derision and
the reproach of it is a burden.

Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you; I will save
the limping ones and gather the outcasts and will make them a praise and
a name in every land of their shame.

At that time I will bring you in; yes, at that time I will gather you, for I
will make you a name and a praise among all the nations of the earth
when I reverse your captivity before your eyes, says the Lord."

Than thou canst fully know.

Have faith in God, my soul,

While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks

"When the angels went away from them into heaven, the

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,

all seated on the ground

an angel of the Lord came down,

and glory shone around.

"Fear not," said he for mighty dread

had seized their troubled minds,

"Glad tidings of great joy I bring

to you and all mankind.

To you, in David's town, this day

is born of David's line

a Savior Who is Christ the Lord;

and this shall be a sign:

The heavenly Babe you there shall find

to human view displayed,

all simply wrapped in swaddling clothes

and in a manger laid."

Thus spoke the angel.

Suddenly appeared a throng of angels

praising God, who thus addressed

their joyful song:

"All glory be to God on high

and to the earth be peace;

to those on whom His favor rests

goodwill shall never cease."

Monday Meditation: The King Shall Come

"Lift up your heads, O you gates; and be lifted up,
you age-abiding doors, that the King of glory may come in!"
(Psalm 24:7)

Messiah Gate
Jerusalem, Israel

The King shall come when morning dawns,

And light triumphant breaks,

When beauty gilds the eastern hills

And life to joy awakes.

Not as of old a little Child,

To bear and fight and die,

But crowned with glory like the sun,

That lights the morning sky.

O brighter than the rising morn

When He, victorious, rose,

And left the lonesome place of death,

Despite the rage of foes.

O brighter than the glorious morn

Shall this fair morning be,

When Christ our King in beauty comes,

And we His face shall see!

The King shall come when morning dawns

And light and beauty brings;

Hail Christ the Lord! Thy people pray,

Come quickly, King of kings!

Amen.

We three kings of Orient are;

Bearing gifts we traverse afar,

Field and fountain, moor and mountain,

Following yonder star.

O star of wonder, star of light,

Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding,

Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,

Gold I bring to crown Him again,

King forever, ceasing never,

Over us all to reign.

O star of wonder, star of light,

Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding,

Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Frankincense to offer have I;

Incense owns a Deity nigh;

Prayer and praising, voices raising,

Worshiping God on high.

O star of wonder, star of light,

Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding,

Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume

Breathes a life of gathering gloom;

Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,

Sealed in a stone-cold tomb.

O star of wonder, star of light,

Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding,

Guide us to thy perfect Light.

Glorious now behold Him arise;

King and God and Sacrifice

Alleluia, Alleluia,

Sounds through the earth and skies.

Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding,

Guide us to thy perfect Light.

And The Light Dwells With Him

"Were you present to hear the secret counsel of God?
And do you limit the possession of wisdom to yourself?

His covenant and reveal to them its deep inner meaning."
(Psalm 25:14)

"He changes the times and the seasons;  He removes kings and sets up kings.
He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding!
He reveals the deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness,
 and the light dwells with Him!
(Daniel 2: 21-22)

"And all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing.  And He does
according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth,
and none can stay His hand or say to Him, What are you doing?"  Now at
the same time my reason and understanding returned to me; and the glory
of my kingdom, my majesty, and splendor returned to me, and my counselors
and my lords sought me out;  I was reestablished in my kingdom, and still
more greatness than before was added to me.  Now I, Nebuchadnezzar,
praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, Whose works are all
faithful and right and Whose ways are just. And those who walk in pride
He is able to abase and humble."
(Daniel 4:35-37)

"But when you pray, go into your most private room, and closing the door,
pray to your Father, Who is in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret,
will reward you in the open.  And when you pray, do not heap up phrases,
multiply words, repeating the same over and over, as the Gentiles do,
for they think they will be heard for their much speaking. Do not be
like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him."
(Matthew 6:6-8)

"If any man desires to do His will, God's pleasure, he will know, have
the needed illumination to recognize, and tell for himself whether the
teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from Myself and of
My own accord and on My own authority.  He who speaks on his
own authority seeks to win honor for himself. He who teachings
originate with himself seeks his own glory. But He Who seeks
the glory and is eager for the honor of Him Who sent Him,
He is true; and there is no unrighteousness or falsehood
or deception in Him."
(John 7:17-18)

"I do not call you servants (slaves) any longer, for the servant
does not know what is master is doing, working out. But I have
called you My friends, because I have made known to you
everything that I have heard from My Father.  I have revealed
to you everything I have learned from Him.  You have not
chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed you
that you might go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and
that your fruit may be lasting, that it may remain, abide,
so that whatever you ask the Father in My Name as
presenting all that I AM, He may give it to you."
(John 15: 15-16)
