Remembering D-Day June 6, 1944: "Lest We Forget"

An American flag planted on the beach in Normandy, France
June, 1944

On this day 77 years ago, 156,000 thousand young men
from America, Canada, and Great Britain stormed the beaches
along a 50 mile stretch of coast in the Normandy region of France.

The Allied invasion of Nazi Germany-occupied Europe, and the
subsequent liberation of many people and nations held captive
by the powers of human and spiritual evil had begun.

Today we commemorate the triumph of freedom over tyranny,
and honor the courageous service of these brave young men.

Our freedom today, which we hold so dear, yet so often take for granted,
is a precious gift, purchased with the life blood of these men, many
of whom never came home again after the war.

May we strive to live every day with a true sense of gratitude and
thanksgiving, and never for a moment allow their sacrifice to be forgotten.
