Full Strawberry Moon 2018

This week's full Strawberry Moon will reach it's lunar peak in the wee hours of
Thursday the 28th of June.  In the Cherokee language, the moon is called, Tihaluhiyi,
or the Green Corn Moon.  This waxing period marks the first appearance of
"corn in tassel"and the flowering of other field crops
 like tomatoes, squash, and pumpkins.

This is a time to begin preparations for the upcoming mid-summer
Corn Dance and other festivals celebrated during the growing season.
Traditionally, it was a time when a group of volunteers known as
the AniGadugi Society made repairs to homes in Cherokee villages,
while also attending to the special needs of the poor, the
elderly and the sick.

June in southern New Jersey is when strawberries are ripe and
ready for picking, whether out in the field, or already picked and waiting
at local farm markets or in the produce section of your local grocery store.
Strawberry season ends soon so go get your share of these delicious
sweet red summer berries while they last!
