National German Chocolate Cake Day

Finally!

A holiday I can literally sink my teeth into!

Today, all across the USA,

is National German Chocolate Cake Day !

German Chocolate Cake

Although this cake sounds like it might have been first baked in
Germany, it actually hails from the great state of Texas!

On June 3, 1957 the first known recipe for "German's Chocolate Cake"
appeared in the Dallas Morning News feature, "Recipe of the Day".
The sweet chocolate cake with delicious coconut-pecan frosting,
was the creation of Mrs. George Clay, a Dallas homemaker.

The recipe called for using the Baker Chocolate Company's
"German's Sweet Chocolate" which is a type of dark baking chocolate
developed over a century before by American baker Sam German.

However, as the cake recipe grew in popularity, the letter, "s"
was eventually dropped from the cake's name, which has
led to some confusion over the years about it's true national origin.

Nevertheless, this decadent, 100% American dessert classic has
never lost it's popularity, and is still one of the most favorite cakes
served at birthday parties, weddings,  church picnics, and
many other social gatherings-both formal and non-formal- today.
